The Mysore Summer Races 2014 came to an end on Tuesday with a card of nine races going through on the final day. The highlight of the day was Fink’s victory in the Mysore Race Club Million. The Manjri Stud bred dark bay colt Fink (Phoenix Tower-Fleurissimo) trained by M Eshwar kept his unblemished record intact with a sixth win, a feat that has not been achieved by any horse in the country in recent memory. That is indeed a feather in the cap of Manjri Stud. Jockey Y.S.Srinath was astride the ‘Champ’ in all its wins.

“I bought this handsome horse as a package from Manjri with five other fillies,” said the owner Mr.P.S.Ranganathan. “One of them, King’s Dream died of colic while the others Duma, Sofast, Jota and Sancy have been doing decently well. I am absolutely delighted the way he is winning race after race and look forward to leading in some Classics,” he added.

Fink settled beautifully in third while Society Music called the shots followed by Rising Rani. Entering the home stretch Rising Rani took the initiative to move forward but turned out to be a mere spectator when Fink shifted gears and cruised home. Fink covered the seven furlongs trip in a smart timing that was just 0.41 seconds slower than the course record.

The season’s honours went to trainer Pratap Kamath and jockey Y.S.Srinath with 15 and 14 wins respectively. Both of them excelled on the concluding day with a treble each while P.S.Chouhan scored a double.

Pratap Kamath trained Spinning Chakram (LuciferSam-Hyacinth) who missed a hat-trick narrowly in its last start made amends by winning the Bannur Plate, a 2000 metres race for horses rated 60 and above. Five horses lined up for the start of the race and Spinning Chakram, the youngest among them at 4 years was the raging favourite at 100-75 ‘on’. Settled nicely in second behind Yamas, Spinning Chakram moved effortlessly to gain the lead with 600 metres in balance and stayed well till the finish under P.S.Chouhan. Stable mates Scholar and Demanding Format finished second and third respectively.

Pratap Kamath and P.S.Chouhan’s second win came through Pepper King (Hurricane Center-Daily Dance in the Divine Light Plate. With just one win from a dozen starts, the 4 year old was sent in at nourishing odds in a field that was reduced to ten with the withdrawal of Gayle’s Storm and Silver Oak. Young Gallant was in the lead right from the start and was joined by Charm And Dream and Spiritual Blue on top of the straight. Spiritual Blue was traveling the best among the three and surged forward. Pepper King started to gain ground on the extreme outside and with a power packed ride by P.S.Chouhan sped past and won it by a ‘neck despite the eventual runner-up fighting back till the wire. Ayman finished on being third in front of Albatross. Silver Oak and Gayle’s Storm were non-starters in the race.

Zareer Darashah trained Bandito (Phoenix Tower-Athymia) completed an encore in the higher division. Ice Skater and Ace Princess who were disputing the lead all the way were joined by Time Flies on entering the straight. Even as Time Flies surged forward, Bandito moved in with a strong challenge and the two fought a grim battle till the post with the latter ridden out by Y.S.Srinath held out by three parts of a length. The favourite Robinhood Pandey was in chase of the duo all through the straight to finish third.

Trainer Pratap Kamath and Jockey Y.S.Srinath who were presented with mementos a race earlier for being the leading trainer and jockey, combined together to celebrate their success with a win on Esoterical (Ajaad-Carra Mia) in the concluding race, the higher division of the Oncidium Plate. Thrillseeker went on a start to finish bid and enjoyed four lengths lead on entering the straight. The lead diminished rapidly with Little Athena ranging forward to take it up. Y.S.Srinath started to work his way on Esoterical and the 5 year old mare carrying the top weight of 62.5 kilograms responded readily to slip in from the inside and win. Little Athena, Thrillseeker and Nuala filled the judge’s frame in that order.

Class Above (Oath-Renascent) from the stables of S.Rakesh who had opened its account in a maidens’ race three weeks ago scored an encore in the lower division of the Capt.Nabi Khan Memorial Plate. Rakesh’s trainee had to get his win ratified in the Steward’s room after the race favourite Teri Adah who lost out to be third lodged an objection. Teri Adah was quick to hit the front after jumping out from the outermost draw. Class Above raced in fourth position initially and moved to be a close behind the leader as they approached the 600 metres pole. The two were almost together as they headed for the last 400 metres and Class Above despite running a bit green surged past Teri Adah inside the last 100 metres. Teri Adah had to be checked when Class Above closed in sharply while moving forward and ended up third behind the late finishing Precept. Aanchal Beauty was a close fourth in the same frame.

Vishal Yadav trained Lagoona (Mull of Kintyre-Zerbilla) was strongly supported in the betting to be the favourite at 2-1 in the Carnival Plate. The 4 year old filly whose only win was about 16 months ago produced the required gallop at the right time to down Peppr on the last stride. Princess of Syria tried to make it a start to finish affair but Born For Passion tracking her closely all the way headed past to take charge on entering the home straight. Peppr kept improving from the inside and Lagoona was still adrift by two lengths. Inside the last 100 metres Peppr grabbed the lead from the inside and Lagoona with a sustained run managed to collar by a neck at the finish. Born For Passion was third in the same picture another ‘neck’ away. Archer was withdrawn on veterinary grounds before the race.

Vikram Appachu trained Supreme Strength (Case Law-Inkling) a winner in its previous start two weeks ago made light of the 12 points penalty in rating en-route to a pillar to post victory in the Jan-E-Jan Plate, the opener of the day. Supreme Strength rushed to the front as the gates opened and came in about three lengths ahead of the nearest challenger coming into the last two furlongs. Kicking on gamely Supreme Strength stayed clear of Arc Angel who was in chase all through the race. Prost and Shades of Scarlet came in late to finish third and fourth respectively.

Greenbro (Greensmith-Iquique) from the stables of C.V.G.K.Kishore pulled it off successfully in the lower division of the Oncidium Plate. The favourite Grand Success and Second Lady led the field from the start. On the final straight for the final run both of them began to dispute the lead with Second Lady having an edge from the outside. Greenbro racing in about fifth with 200 metres left from the finish was guided by Arshad Alam to take the inner path and with a strong run shot through to spare two lengths to Second Lady at the wire. Grand Success was third another length away. Sea Runner was withdrawn on veterinary grounds.
