Dual Derby winner Australia continued to display his prowess with a classy win in the G1 Juddmonte International Stakes at York. Aidan O’Brien trained Australia was made to throw his hat in the race with older horses in the fray. Jockey Joseph O’Brien probably had to miss quite a few meals to make the allotted weight of 124 pounds. The youngster still enjoyed most support, sent off as the favourite at 8-13. Joseph settled Australia in the rear early and let his opponents juggle around in front with stable companion Kingfisher leading the pack. Australia started to make headway 3 furlongs out and with a show of speed and class he sailed to the lead approaching the final furlong. Joseph just waved his whip and the chestnut finished powerfully to spare two lengths to The Grey Gatsby. Telescope was third another 2 ¼ lengths behind.
“He had had a good summer break, so was ready to go and do a good piece of work,” said trainer Aidan O’Brien speaking of Australia who was racing after a gap of 53 days. “With the prestige of this race, we could do nothing else but to come here, but I was very nervous about it and Joseph rode him accordingly. We couldn’t ask for any more. My heart starts beating fast at 4 o’clock every morning because of this horse,” he added.
