V.E.DAY LEADS STABLE ONE-TWO IN TRAVERS
By Racing Correspondent | 24 Aug 2014 |
English Channel’s 3 year old colt V.E.Day trained by James Jerkins and ridden by Javier Castellano won the ‘Mid-Summer Derby’, the G1 Travers Stakes at Saratoga in a nail biting finish, beating more accomplished stable companion Wicked Strong. Trainer James Jerkins who had saddled Afleet Express to victory in the race in 2010 was over the moon to score his second and also a one-two.
“It means an awful lot. It’s unreal,” said Jerkins. “I just feel bad for Wicked Strong, that’s the only thing, he ran so hard. (But) I’ll take it.”
The favourite Bayern set off in the lead at a blistering pace with Wicked Strong racing prominently while V.E.Day was held up in the rear. As they approached the straight Bayern was completely out of steam and faded out to ultimately finish last. Wicked Strong moved ahead to lead with Tonalist in chase. V.E.Day was ridden to close in and looked to be finishing in second but he surprised everyone with a powerful gallop to nail his stable-mate at the wire by a ‘nose’. Tonalist was third another 2 ½ lengths away.
