SUNSET GLOW TAKES DEBUTANTE STAKES AT DEL MAR
By Racing Correspondent | 31 Aug 2014 |
Wesley A Ward trained Sunset Glow was ridden to victory in the G1 Del Mar Debutante Stakes by jockey Victor Espinoza. Sent off as the 9-10 favourite for the seven furlongs trip, Sunset Glow was held back in fifth early in changed tactics by jockey Victor Espinoza and then angled off rail to force her way between horses in the straight. Taking the lead inside the final furlong, Sunset Glow held on gamely to be a neck ahead of the stubborn Her Emmynency at the wire. Conquest Eclipse finished third another three parts of a length behind.
"I know she's been used to running up front, but I thought we'd have to come from the back,” said jockey Victor Espinoza on changing the riding tactics and added, ”I'm sure glad it worked out. When you've got a favourite like this, it's good when it works out. But she gives me confidence; she responds to what you want to do. There was never a doubt she would go through those holes. No hesitation. I'm proud of her for that. She got a little tired at the end, but she's the kind that will probably run on."
