COMPETITIVE EDGE DOMINANT IN HOPEFUL STAKES
By Racing Correspondent | 02 Sep 2014 |
Super Saver’s Competitive Edge slammed the field to win the G1 Hopeful Stakes, the conspicuous race of the last day of the summer meeting at Saratoga. Trained by Todd A Pletcher, Competitive Edge, a winner on debut was sent off as the favourite at 3-5. Jumping out from the outside Competitive Edge rushed to be with the pair of Signature Cat and I Spent It. Signature Cat tired out rounding the turn and Competitive Edge stormed ahead mid-way up the straight with jockey John R Velazquez not having much work to do. It was a one-two for Super Saver with another son of his, I Spent It finishing second 5 ¾ lengths behind. Sharm took the third spot many lengths away..
"This one has a great talent," said jockey Velazquez. "The only thing about this one - nothing bothers him. This colt, nothing tears his hair out, scares him or anything. He's so laid-back, his future can be much better than the other ones. Like everything else, he has to stay sound. A great mind."
"The thing that's really cool for us is he's a son of Super Saver, and he's our Derby winner," commentated the winning trainer Pletcher.
