FIESOLANA WINS THE MATRON STAKES
By Racing Correspondent | 14 Sep 2014 |
Aussie Rules’ Fiesolana was at her best while winning the first Group 1 both for herself and her trainer Willie McCreery in the G1 Coolmore Fastnet Matron Stakes at Leopardstown in Ireland. Jockey Billy Lee rode a confident waiting race on the 5 year old. Held back towards the rear early, Fiesolana improved well towards the last furlong but had a wall of horses in front. Lee waited patiently behind them hoping for a split and once he found one, forced Fiesolana through the gap to win by half a length. The 7-4 favourite Rizeena was second and Tobann finished third three quarters of a length behind.
"I'm absolutely thrilled. I'm thrilled for her and for the owners,” said trainer McCreery. “They paid a lot of money for her and they could have easily send her to a big trainer in England or Ireland and I am delighted to have repaid them” he added.
