A ‘BRILLIANT’ LEGER TRIUMPH FOR KINGSTON HILL
By Racing Correspondent | 14 Sep 2014 |
Mastercraftsman’s Kingston Hill came up with a brilliant performance to lift the G1 Ladbrookes St.Leger Stakes at Doncaster. Runner-up in the G1 Epsom Derby, Kingston Hill was sent off as the favourite at 9-4 for the world’s oldest classic. Restrained more towards the rear, Kingston made steady headway on the wide outside under Andrea Atzeni nearing the last two furlongs. Up with a strong Challenge with a furlong left, Kingston Hill hung left and forged ahead of Romsdal to give his trainer Roger Varian his first Classic success. Snow Sky finished third.
“It’s a dream,” said jockey Andrea Atzeni. “I rode him like the best horse in the race, which I thought that he was, and he travelled beautifully. He’s so laid-back and goes to sleep, but when I pulled him out he was always going to get there. He wanders around when he hits the front.”
"I can't put it into words," said trainer Varian on winning his first Classic. "It's brilliant, it's a relief and exciting” he added.
