THE GREY GATSBY FLIES OVER AUSTRALIA

By Racing Correspondent | 14 Sep 2014 |

Mastercraftsman’s The Grey Gatsby scored an unforgettable victory over dual Derby winner Australia in the G1 Qipco Irish Championship Stakes at Leopardstown in Ireland.

The Grey Gatsby was held back in the rear early and improved to be sixth as they approached the last two furlongs. With a furlong left in the race The Grey Gatsby had moved to be second behind Australia who had established a four lengths lead. Ryan Moore started to power his way on The Grey Gatsby and the French Derby winner responded with a magnificent turn of foot to bridge the gap and beat Australia on the last stride. Trading Leather took the third spot another 4 ½ lengths behind.

“I’m tremendously proud of the horse and Ryan gave him a fantastic ride,” said the winning trainer Kevin Ryan. “He went out with a plan, as he knew it was going to be a quickly run race and I think now the horse will get the credit he deserves”.

“He tries hard and put his head down and fought, so I’d say both horses ran very good races to pull clear of Group 1 winners. It was the plan to be patient and have him where he was comfortable and he travelled well. If you give him a target, he chases it,” said jockey Ryan Moore while complementing his mount on the astounding win.
