Aidan O’Brien trained Adelaide was masterly handled by Ryan Moore to win the G1 Cox Plate in an absolutely thrilling blanket finish at Moonee Valley, Australia. The victory gave O’Brien and Ryan Moore their first Group 1 success in Australia.

Drawn unfavourably at 13 out of 14 runners, Adelaide was held back to run last with Ryan Moore preferring to move towards the inner fence while The Cleaner rushed to the lead from the outermost draw. Passing the half-way stage Adelaide began to pick on the horses with baffling ease and was quickly into third about five off the fence as they headed towards the turn for home. The favourite Fawkner was marginally in front on top of the short straight but could not hold on to it as Adelaide and Moore came tearing down to snatch the lead inside the last 50 yards and score a stunning victory. Multiple Group 1 winner Silent Achiever finished with a flourish to be third ahead of Side Glance.

“He's a very good horse, circumstances went against us but he was much the best," said jockey Ryan Moore. "This horse has shown how good he is, he's been around the world this year. He's a very good horse because he's done it the hard way."
