The Indo-German Chamber of Commerce (IGCC), unfazed by the unfortunate status of the postponement of horse racing in Mumbai and the global recession, have braved to venture and ignite action at the Mahalaxmi Race Course with their annual Christmas Fest over the coming weekend. The Christmas Fest, an event for the entire family, is an advance 'Christmas Gift' to Mumbaikars, coming from a chain of German Companies established in India. The Two day fest will commence at 11 am on Saturday and a host of interesting and entertaining event flow is expected to enthral thousands of visitors at the Members' Lawns at the race course on 29-30 November, 2008. "It's an attempt to give the people an opportunity to savour the German Culture right here in the heart of Mumbai" explained Mr. Peter Deubet, Dy Director General, IGCC. "In Germany, around this time, preparation gets into full swing for Christmas. It's the time to go shopping and time to be merry. The idea is to entertain the people of Mumbai – German Style! There will be the famous German Beer and Sausages to devour, a host of shopping options of various quality products for the impulsive shoppers and jewellery and fine arts for the choosy ladies. The children too will love every single moment. Besides the usual 'kids' area' where a lot of games and rides are on offer, kids will have a variety of workshops to develop their individual skills as well. We have elaborately planned a thoroughly entertaining weekend for the entire family. There is something for everyone." When reminded by Indiarace that the race course is a venue of flirting with Lady Luck, Peter was quick to add, "Of course we have that covered too! There will be a lucky draw lottery with a bumper prize being tickets to Germany for two - courtesy Lufthansa Airlines. So when you buy the lottery ticket the returns are at high odds aren't they? Besides, the proceeds of the lottery will go to charity, so it is in fact a win-win situation anyways." couldn't agree more, could you? Mr. Vivek Jain, who represented the RWITC, wore a visibly relieved look. "At least there is some activity at the race course," he quipped. “While it is unfortunate that there will be no racing action, the fact that the race course will be full of people for the IGCC is a welcome change. This is the third year in succession for the IGCC Christmas fest and the event has gained in popularity every year. The event, I am sure, will be enjoyed by everyone and the racing part of the IGCC sponsored day will be held once the horses make their appearance on the Mahalaxmi track. I thank the IGCC for bearing with us as also all those Sponsors who have co-operated with us in these trying times." Asked to comment on the current crisis, Mr. Jain said "The Equine Influenza has taken a large toll but I reckon we are just about beginning to see the end of it. About 70 odd horses have now come out of the stables and have begun to trot in Pune, which is an encouraging sign. The Vets are happy logging the symptoms of improvement the horses are showing. We are monitoring the situation closely. There has been a drastic impact on all the Turf Clubs in the country and this sure is a learning experience on how to tackle epidemics in future." When pressed to reveal when racing is likely to start in Mumbai, Vivek added, "The exact speed of recovery of the race horses is anybody's guess. However, it would be safe to assume that racing would most likely be held closer to February 2009." Be that as it may, the IGCC event will bring alive the race course for the next best reason – entertainment. For once, the wives will be more eager to come to the race course! One of the highlights over the weekend would be a live performance by Wilburn on Saturday and Gary Lawyer and his live band on Sunday evening. Besides, the host of enjoyable kids activities like Puppet shows and Magic Shows, juggling shows are sure to go down well among the younger folks. The legendary Santa Claus will make an appearance and spread goodness among all present. The children are sure to have a blast! Other activities listed are sale of Christmas handicrafts and gifts, toys, stationary and children's books, assorted cakes and chocolates, furniture, shoes and bags, jewellery and gems, Indian and Western garments, home décor and many other commodities. Kids can also take part in several interesting and intelligent workshops. All this promises a peaceful and fun evening to enjoy with your family - an excellent way to unwind and participate in welcoming the Christmas. So if you are looking to treat your loved ones with a thrilling weekend, isn't the Mahalaxmi race-course the perfect venue?
