Into Mischief’s Goldencents put in a brilliant show to win the G1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile for the second successive year at Santa Anita. The 4 year was saddled by Leandro Mora, assistant to Doug O’Neill after O’Neil was banned from saddling in the Breeders’ Cup following a failed drug test by one of his wards in June. Goldencents who was retired after the race will head to Spendthrift Farm to take up stud duties.
Jockey Rafael Bejarno who was astride Goldencents last year pushed the 4 year old to hit the front early and set a decent pace. He was well in front as they went past the half-way mark with a lead of almost three lengths over his rivals. In the final straight the margin diminished with Tapiture closing down but Bejarno rode out to keep Goldencents going till the post to defend his title. Pants on Fire finished third.
“I knew I was going fast and I had to find a way to give him a little break from the three-eighths to the quarter-pole,” jockey Bejarano said. “I was able to do that. When the other horse started to come to me, I held onto him just a little bit before I turned him loose. When I turned him loose, he fired big.”
