Mr. Vijay Kumar Gupta & trainer L V R Deshmukh leading Supreme Fairy (P S Chouhan Up), winner of The P.Veereshwar Rao Memorial Cup

The Hyderabad Winter season commenced on Sunday with a card of eight races framed for the opening day. Firm favourites dominated the proceedings winning all but the last race of the day. Jockey P.S.Chouhan who had shared the top spot in Monsoon kick started the season with a treble. Trainers L.V.R Deshmukh and Laxman Singh had their share of a brace each on the inaugural day.

Runner-up of the Deccan Derby Supreme Fairy (Multidimensional-Supreme Princess / Usha Stud) won the P.Veereshwar Rao Memorial Cup, the feature of the day. The 3 year old filly from Deshmukhs’ yard was sent off as ‘money back’ favourite among the five runners for the seven furlongs race but she had to work hard to bag the race. Noble Citizen set off in front and approaching the final turn Greek Star was quickly in second and wasted no time in taking over the running with two furlongs left. Greek Star stepped up the momentum to take a lead of about two lengths and Supreme Fairy began to close that up inside the last furlong. The two went stride for stride in the last 100 metres and Supreme Fairy finally managed to get her neck in front close to the winning post.

Deshmukh and Chouhan had teamed up to score a decisive victory with Advocate General (Stern Opinion-Ashatamasha) in the opener, the Beginners Plate. The grey colt who had failed as a favourite in its debut run during monsoon went into the 1000 metres dash at unbackable odds against his five opponents. Shooting ahead to the lead at start Advocate General led all the way into the home stretch and stretched out effortlessly. Mighty Swing finished second 5 ¾ lengths behind. Golden Angel and Princess Hina filled the frame in that order.

Having already scored a double on horses one could not have a bet, P.S.Chouhan brought out his thir winner through Laxman Singh trained Vijay Vidhata (Gaswar-Blue Sonata) in the Dawn Plate – division I. The youngster who has done nothing wrong so far completed its hat-trick. Chasing the leader Alameda all the way from the start, Vijay Vidhata was reminded of its task with three good backhanders by Chouhan in the last 300 metres and the 3 year old responded well to head past and score a facile win. A longway back third was Lips Locking.

Trainer Laxman Singh had a race earlier saddled Whats Up (Mathematecian-Lyricist) to victory in the lower division of the Deccan Star Cup. Rushing ahead under A.M.Tograllu to emerge clear of the others as the gates opened, Whats Up made every post a winning one. Nano Belle and Amazing Weapon raced in close attendance till the last 400 metres and not able to match strides with the winner ended up second and third respectively.

S.S.Faisal Hassan schooled Panachecorn (China Visit-Da Vinci Rose) who had had a go in the Deccan Derby, justified the favouritism in the lower division of the Dawn Plate. Panachecorn was prominent early along with Marquise on the inside and Roma Royal on the outside. The rider of Roma Royal was dislodged within the first furlong and despite the fall happening in Panachecorn’s path the filly progress was not hampered. Entering the home turn first Panachecorn kept kicking on and stayed ahead to hold on by half a length from the late finishing Kohinoor Punch. Pakat Pakat Pakat also charged in late to finish third.

M.V.Narayana Rao’s 3 year old filly Torremolinos (Alnasr Alwasheek-Encouragement) scored her maiden win in the Welcome Plate. The filly shared the favouritism with another maiden Vista, both quoted a 6-4 each. Having an early advantage, Torremolinos was the first to be sighted on the straight. Vista began to close up inside the final furlong with jockey Chouhan riding hard. Torremolinos shifted left slightly as Vista closed up from the outside but jockey Deep Shanker managed to keep her going and held on by a ‘head’ at the wire. Jockey P.S.Chouhan lodged an objection against the winner for interference in the last 200 metres and the Stewards not finding muck substance in Chouhan’s claim overruled the objection. Kohinoor Karishma rallied on along the inner path to finish third.

Amazing Approach (Win Legend-Miss Pukka) gave an easy ride to apprentice Deepak Singh while annexing the Srinivasa Sadagopa Sharma Memorial Cup. Tracking the leader Numinous all the way from the start, Amazing Approach got stronger under Deepak Singh’s urgings and surged ahead without much fuss. Rapidest and Great Warrior filled the judge’s frame.

K.Satheesh trained Over Look (Inhabitant-Eldunari) who was winless from fourteen starts finally came good at nourishing odds to win the Moment of Glory Plate, the concluding race of the day. Jockey B.Dileep took Over Look to the lead as the horses were dispatched and was never threatened at any stage of the race. Concours finished second after chasing the winner all the way. Squanderers Square ended up third.
