Srinath corners the limelight

Symbol Of Speed (Srinath up) winner of the Governor's Trophy being led in by owner Mr.Harinder Singh & trainer Mr.Lokanath

Trainer Loknath Gowda’s Symbol of Speed proved too good, slamming the opposition to win the Governor’s Trophy, a terms for three-year olds, which highlighted the racing on Saturday. The daughter of Placerville, Symbol of Speed showed vast improvement when sailing past favourite Red Apache who was flat-footed when it came to changing gears under pressure. Symbol of Speed won in the manner of a good type of a horse and her victory was in keeping with the current lot of juveniles from the Poonawalla Stud Farm who are proving to be better than their immediate predecessors. Red Apache was backed to the exclusion of his rivals though the son of Razeen had recorded a matter of fact victory in his last start. This was so because he was favoured by the terms as he carried no penalty for his win against maidens who hadn’t made their mark either. Symbol of Speed had run a faraway third in her only run but on that occasion, she had found the sprint too sharp against the class of Balthazar. Now running over a more suitable trip of a mile, Symbol of Speed who raced in the fourth or fifth position, smoothly sailed into a striking position even as Red Apache had grabbed the lead and appeared to be a in a position of strength. Red Apache found no extra gear as Symbol of Speed swooped on him and went away for an effortless win in the hands of jockey Srinath who is going great guns. It was yet another big day for the temperamental rider as he booted home five winners for the first time in his career. Four of the wins came in the first four races in the card and his tally was rounded off by riding home favourite Ascot Lady to an easy win over Sarvaguna Sampanna and Only Royale in the last race of the day. The third named came in for support in the ring though the trip was sharp but quite often, such horses have managed to win when confronted with poor opposition. The well bred daughter of Greensmith, Ascot Lady who has a minor conformational defect, proved too speedy for the rest. Srinath began the day on a rousing note when he drove out the well backed Magical Spirit to an easy win over Outoforder. A little bit of luck favoured him in the next race as the front-running Rare Talent who too has her share of physical problems, went lame after leading all the way till weakening in the shadow of the post and Gallardo made good the misfortune of the front-runner. Fancied Pick Me Up ran without hope. Elusive Fantasy had strong credentials but with Star Movements coming in for inspired support, both these runners shared favouritism. Star Movements went too soon to the front and gave false hopes because when Elusive Fantasy delivered a strong challenge, the front runner caved in too easily. There was a quiet touch on Matter of Opinion who showed out in the paddock parade as against Fearless Princess who had flopped in her last start and Distributor who did not have good shine on his coat. Distributor had the first run on his opponents as the field straightened for the run in for home but had no answer when Matter of Opinion devoured ground and left the field stranded. The odds drifted out alarmingly on Ganapathy trained Summer Serenade so much so that those who backed the five-year old mare had given up hopes. Because, on most occasions, such a price drift, had invariably led to the inevitable but for a change, the gold and brown runner was in the best behavior, winning against the friendless Dirham. Punters who looked for a winner elsewhere were left to rue to their decision.
