PADMANABHAN, TREVOR EMERGE CHAMPIONS
By Ikram Khan | 14 Mar 2015 | BANGALORE
Trainer S Narredu leading Authoritarian (Suraj Narredu Up), winner of The Garuda Bangalore Juvenile Million (Gr.3)
Well trainer S Padmanabhan and jockey Trevor Patel emerged champs this winter. But it is the performance of the Scottish pro David Allan which warmed the hearts of the racing buffs, David booting home more than 20 winners at this centre including a couple for other trainers who cleverly chose to ride his luck and trust his ability to produce his best.
On the final day, David again combined successfully with Paddy to record a double, first guiding home Spanish Moon to an effortless victory in the upper division of the Leading Bookmakers Trophy before he needed to stretch every sinew to edge out Wild Wild Angels while guiding the fortunes of Eragon in the Leading Owner Trophy. Eragon on the strength of his smashing victory in his last essay rightly opened the first favourite before drifting out to (4/1), money pouring in on the Arvind Ganapathy schooled Mandarin who despite looking a trifle gross at the paddock parade surprisingly attracted maximum support. The favourite it was clear was struggling to keep pace all through the seven furlongs trip while Wild Wild Angels and Eragon looked comfortable slowly yet surely moving up to do battle in the final furlong. Eragon gained the day, David determined to sign off on a winning note.
It is no secret that Suraj Narredu who was booed by a section of the crowd, not happy with his effort on Be Safe in the Indian Turf Invitation Cup, was a little nervous going to the starting gates on the half-money favourite Super Sunshine. But the leading pro overcame the initial blues guiding home the talented colt to a popular win in the upper division of the Champion Trainer Trophy.
Suraj next had to complete his job on the fashionably bred Authoritarian who is touted as one of the best youngsters on the circuit. Suraj’s father Satish had disclosed during the barrier draw for the Garuda Juvenile Million that Authoritarian had suffered a minor setback in training after his smashing debut but now that all is well he had a good chance to win the million. It is also learnt that one of the owners from Mumbai was interested in buying half share, ready to pay a king’s ransom to obtain the share but Satish aware of the fact that Authoritarian and Admirality are the two best youngsters going into summer declined the offer.
The on-money favourite tracked Nostalgic Memories who set a suicidal pace and Auriga for most part of the seven furlongs before Suraj changed gears and the public choice romped home to establish that he is a horse with a bright future.
Auriga in defeat was not disgraced taking into account that he was beaten by a classic hopeful and this Sriram ward will pick up his share of races in summer.
Uday Garudachar, sponsor of the event immensely pleased with the result disclosed that it was good to see a real good horse win the event and that the result went in favour of the racing buffs too.
“We are most pleased with our association with BTC and we would like to continue our sponsorship,” said Uday.
The Rai brothers, Muthappa Rai and Chandrashekar Rai ended the season on a satisfying note, four winners in the week-end. The handsome looking grey Real Supreme who had impressed most while finishing second behind Equine Love in his last essay was a `cinch’ in the Champion Jockey Trophy specially taking into account that Equine Love on Friday won with a degree of comfort in the higher class. But as it so often happens, Aayan from Mahesh’s yard garnered the maximum support and this came as a big bonus for the owners and supporters of Real Supreme who provided jockey T S Jodha an arm-chair ride to success after he got to pilot the grey after Imran Khan chose to opt out not fit to complete his engagements after his ride on Angela in the second race.
Next was the in-form Power Of Time from Amit Caddy’s yard and the long striding and high-kicking action of the favourite proved too good for his 10 rivals in the upper division of the Leading Stud Trophy. All credit to Amit for keeping Power Of Time in winning condition all through the season. Power Of Time in fact was a trifle unlucky not to emerge the Horse Of The Season, chalking out three straight wins against Pippin who apart from recording three wins had finished third once in his four starts.
Satish Narredu who only had two winners, apart from leading in his two good youngsters struck through the unfancied Sir Majestic in the opening event and this certainly must have brought the smile back on the face of Satish.
Suezy Oh from Narayan Gowda’s yard was another facile winner on the final day .
The winner opened (5/2) in the betting ring before being offered at (8/1) and this put off most followers of form who fancied him to score. Stablemate Lucky Thirteen was quietly fancied but the fancied horse was never in contention while Suezy Oh powered home in the hands of Dashrath Singh much to the disappointment of the punters who made the switch based on the indication from the betting ring.
