MUBTAAHIJ DEMOLISHES DERBY RIVALS

By Racing Correspondent | 29 Mar 2015 |

Mike de Kock trained Mubtaahij rollicked the opposition by a huge 8 lengths in the G2 UAE Derby. The 3 year old son of Dubawi had won three out of his last four starts on the track in the last three months, which includes the UAE 2000 Guineas. Mubtaahij now heads to the Kentucky Derby, a privilege that is traditionally assured to the winner of this race. "We're going, we're dreaming,” said de Kock about taking Mubtaahij to Kentucky and added "It's probably the best [of my UAE Derby winners] because of what's still to come."

Sent off as the joint-favourite at 9-4, Mubtaahij made headway under Christophe Soumillion to race close behind the leading Japanese pair Golden Barows and Tap That. Mubtaahij unbridled with a terrific turn of foot when Christophe asked for an effort with 300 metres left from home and stretched out to extend the margin of victory with the rider having the luxury of giving a glimpse on the big screen close to the winning post. Maftool and Golden Barows finished second and third respectively.

“I was going very easily and as soon as I pressed the button it was all over,” said Soumillon.
