Dortmund scored an astonishing 4 1/4 lengths triumph in the G1 Santa Anita Derby to extend its unbeaten streak to six from as many starts. It was a proud moment for owner Kaleem Shah, of Indian origin – son of Veteran Indian trainer S.M. Shah – to lead in Dortmund with the Derby sash at the Santa Anita Park. Dortmund will now be vying to emulate his sire Big Brown’s feat as the unbeaten winner of the G1 Kentucky Derby. “Just to have a horse in the Santa Anita Derby is a thrill, but to run this well and win it, is unbelievable,” confessed Shah. “Ever since the San Felipe, this has been like March Madness for me. To be going to the Kentucky Derby with an undefeated horse like this and to be compared to horses like Seattle Slew and Smarty Jones is just amazing,” he added.

Trained by Bob Baffert Dortmund was sent off as the favourite among the half a dozen contenders for the blue ribband. Jockey Martin Garcia took Dortmund to lead the pack from the inside after an initial falter. Stepping up the pace with 3 furlongs left Dortmund went three lengths clear and pulled away inside the last 1 ½ furlongs to wrap it up by 4 ¼ lengths. One Lucky Dane chased the winner all the way to be the runner-up. Bolo was third ahead of Prospect Park.

"Even though he's won all his races, he's still learning," said the rider Garcia. "He can play around a bit but when someone comes to him, or I ask him to go, he becomes push-button and he just takes off.
