CLINICAL JACK FROST POSTS THIRD SUCCESSIVE VICTORY

By Mahendra Mallya | 11 Apr 2015 | MUMBAI

Mr Peter Deubet leading Jack Frost (A Sandesh Up), winner of The Chaitanya Chakram Trophy

The day’s shortest priced runner Jack Frost (Kingda Ka – Breeze And I, Nanoli Stud), owned by sporting and passionate owner Peter Deubet along with Mr Xerxes Shahiwalla & Mrs Farzin Gaekwad, romped home in style making every post a winning one. The start was horrendous for Okavango who planted and took no further part in the race.

Jack Frost found himself in the front, but didn’t seem to mind that he had to make the running, something he is not used to. Jockey Sandesh settled him nicely and maintained a two-length lead all the way into the straight. Jack Frost looked most comfortable coming into the final 400 meters and both Caesars Star and Highlander never seemed a threat at any point. Jack Frost dominated the final furlong and eventually won with a comfortable margin, without extending himself. He won just like a half-money favourite is expected to win – no nonsense, no anxiety and sealing the race long way from home.

It was another hugely productive day for jockey Trevor Patel who has been in blazing for this season. He rode impeccably to blast four wins off the eight-race card. He started off with a bang piloting trainer Nina Lalvani’s Shahriyar (Tiago – Queen’s Bay, Manju Meadows Stud) to a convincing start-to-finish victory in the day’s opener. Trevor deftly poked between horses to go into the lead and kept the momentum going all the way. Favorite Annie followed him closely until the turn, always in second. Moneywise, the other well supported runner was not too far behind, galloping in the fifth or sixth but on the outside of the bunch, about five off the fence.

Shahriyar galloped fluently so Trevor did not have to press the button until they got past the 300 meter mark. Annie was being urged by then yet making no impact on the winner. Shahriyar quickened well when asked to and always maintained a safe distance from Annie and won with a measure of comfort. Star of Babylon came with a dash to take the third spot, beating Moneywise by half-length.

Trevor then partnered Izarra (Placerville – One Magic Moment, Poonawalla Stud) to a sizzling victory, arriving with an electrifying finish. At the start, while Pretty In Patpong and Peppercorn got off smoothly to hit the front, Quatro needed to be urged to get going and Snow Blast was lethargic.

Pretty in Patpong led Peppercorn into the straight, with Izarra ready to pounce on the duo. Trevor didn’t wait too long to unleash Izarra approaching the distance post. Izarra responded readily and within strides sped past the pair in front. Izarra accelerated deftly and was soon well clear of the rest. He won with a widening margin with Trevor not having to do too much. My Freedom repeated his last start performance, covering ground in the final moments to pip Pretty in Patpong for the runner-up slot. Peppercorn showed little zest and lost out on the place money as well, nearly losing his place in the frame to Quatro. The latter recovered very well from the sluggish start to finish on well and could be well worth noting, if assigned another race before the end of the season. Pretty in Patpong earned place money, losing out on the second spot narrowly.

Hosidar Daji’s Hunt For Heads (Noverre – Bold Raider, Sohna Stud) gave Trevor his third win for the day and himself notched a second win for the season. Trevor had to get him from the rear half of the field and find his way between a wall of horses. His experience and patience paid off as Trevor bided his time in the straight to strike the moment he got the right opening.

It was a crowded bunch that turned for home with Invincible trying hard to stay in contention. Soon Pitbull came to take charge, but that was short lived. Hunt For Heads arrived with a good burst and once he surged ahead he looked well in control. Incentio and Stormy Princess had a go at him but Hunt For Heads proved too strong in the finish. Abderus edged out Natalian Express and Home Advantage to get a place in the frame initially, but benefitted from Incentio’s jockey J Chinoy’s faux Pas of failing to weigh in after the race. The Stewards ruled to disqualify Incentio and Abderus was awarded the third spot.

Trevor compiled a fine hatrick romping home with even-money favourite Ad Astra (Royal Kingdom – Calorescence, Equus Stud) in the very next race. Sabiq made the pace from the start and did well to lead them until well into the straight. Ad Astra was off the pace for the first half of the journey and made gradual progress to be in striking zone at the turn, just a couple of lengths from Striking Story who stayed in second behind Sabiq all through.

Once in the straight, Ad Astra and Trevor broke away from the rest to pile up a huge lead, running away from the field. Ad Astra drew away with each stride and won easing up with a wide margin. Striking Story labored to get the second spot and Theory progressed to earn place money finishing ahead of Sabiq.

Anvill Star (Rebuttal – Kabunina, Hazara Stud) trained by Altamash Ahmed showed good temperament and solidity to bring about his maiden victory in a stylish manner. Jockey Darren Williams settled Anvill Star in second behind leader Rock in Rhythm until they straightened up for home. Once into the straight, Anvill Star came alive with a sustained gallop to speed ahead and open up a commanding lead. Koal moved to second and was all out in chase. However, he was simply no match as Anvill Star kicked on gamely to post an impressive win, with the jockey looking back. She is Special improved in the second half of the straight to end a good third.

Shroff trained Abigail (Multidimensional – Violetta, Usha Stud) got third time lucky and showed her gritty side when she fought off favorite Sweeping Star in a close finish. Her lead was always under threat when Sweeping Star made a forward surge in the homestretch. Sweeping Star looked threatening all the time and even got alongside Abigail with a furlong still to go. However, jockey Yash Narredu lost his whip and that may have proved a fatal mistake. The pair fought neck and neck all the way to the wire but in the end, Abigail galloped on bravely to deny a maiden success to the well-backed favourite and bring about her own in her third attempt.

Nirad Karanjawalla’s Joleene (Dark Angel – Hot Dish, Hazara Stud) finally got to her maiden success with a good show under some skillful handling of CS Jodha. Sitting second behind Plan B. Joleene shot ahead early in the straight and did well to sustain it right through the long Mumbai straight. Joleene had on earlier occasions flattered to deceive only to squander her lead in the final moments. Jockey CS Jodha ensured there was no such disappointment this time as he egged Joleene on to stay well ahead of the rest all the way past the winning post. Rare and Gorgeous too was impressive as he improved steadily to end a good second. Grand March progressed rapid in the final furlong to pip long time leader for the third spot.

For the professionals, it was only P Trevor who garnered all the limelight, finishing the day with some fine display in the saddle that fetched four thumping winners.
