The remaining five 'got-abroad' winners are spread across three centres. Winners at Guindy and Delhi, if any, have not been considered.
AUTHORITARIAN (b c Holy Roman Emperor - Scent by Groom Dancer)
Trainer Satish Narredu had a rather quiet winter season sending out winners of just four races and two of them came through Authoritarian who is unbeaten having won both his starts over 1400 m. including the Garuda Bangalore Juvenile Million, Gr.3. The colt is owned by Astir Sales Pvt. Ltd. with the trainer having a share.
To say anything more about the sire Holy Roman Emperor would be tantamount to gilding the lily. He has already been commented upon in the previous article when speaking of Ostwind.
Scent, the dam of Authoritarian, was sold for 8,000 gns as a 2YO. She raced 15 times at 2 to 5, winning once and placing thrice. Her victory came over 2400 m. at Tramore on a surface that had give in it and her best official rating was 70. Scent began her racing in England but shifted to Ireland at 3. She had a different trainer in each of the four years that she raced and her solitary win came when she was with Ms. Joanna Morgan. In Ireland, she raced over long distances up to 3200 m. Authoritarian was bred by New Approach Stud and born at Lumbini Stud.
OXFORD OPINION (b c Medicean - Rainbow Queen by Rainbow Quest)
Dr. M.A.M. Ramaswamy's Oxford Opinion, trained by S. Ganapathy, won two races at Bangalore after an educational debut and then headed for Mahalakshmi. He was a fair third in Poonawalla Breeders' Multi-Million, Gr.1 but blotted his CV with a poor fourth of four in Shapoorji Pallonji Breeders' Juvenile Colts' Championship, Gr.3, for which he was a firm favourite, running erratically and finishing on the stands side railing.
Medicean, a son of Machiavellian, was a top class horse, winning six races from a mile to 2000 m. including the Coral Eurobet Eclipse Stakes, Gr.1 and the Juddmonte Lockinge Stakes, Gr.1. Retired to Cheveley Park Stud where he was born, he has been a successful sire having produced Gr.1 winners like Dutch Art, Siyouma, Nanina, Capponi, Al Shemali, Almerita, Neatico and others. The average winning distance of Medicean's progeny is 9 fur.
Like Medicean, Rainbow Queen was owned by Cheveley Park Stud and trained by Sir Michael Stoute. The mare scored on her debut at 2 over 1400 m. but failed to add a bracket in her remaining four starts. She has had five foals abroad of whom three are winners including Crimson Queen (by Red Ransom) who won seven races but none beyond 1100 m. That was a bit surprising because Rainbow Quest is a proven source of stamina, especially since Machiavellian and his son Medicean's progeny usually take their distance aptitude from the dam line. Oxford Opinion's full-sister Garzoni failed to win from eight starts. Rainbow Queen was purchased for the Poonawallas for 14,000 gns at Tattersalls Sale in 2011. Oxford Opinion traces to Enid and this is a family of the upgrade. However, his distance aptitude is a conundrum.
SUPER SUNSHINE (b c Holy Roman Emperor - Osprey Point by Entrepreneur)
The three Holy Roman Emperor winners are all trained by the Narredus ! Super Sunshine is owned by M/s. P.S. Ranganathan, Mohammed Riyaz and Rajesh Narredu with the last named training the colt. After an encouraging and close third on debut, Super Sunshine won his maiden stylishly on his next attempt. He has not raced since.
Of the other two Holy Roman Emperors, Ostwind is trained by Malesh Narredu and Authoritarian by his older brother Satish.
Super Sunshine's dam Osprey Point did not race and her stud record was not particularly impressive, either. However, she is a half-sister to two good Usha Stud mares, the excellent Vision of India (dam of Crown Treasure, Andreyan, Amazing Power, etc) and Naseem El Fajr (dam of Lombardia, etc). Super Sunshine carries the Danehill-Sadler's Wells cross as Entrepreneur is a son of Sadler's Wells. Rajesh Narredu's colt was bred, like Authoritarian, by New Approach Stud at Lumbini Stud.
CLAYMORE (b c Dark Angel - Gavotte by Sadler's Wells)
Claymore is trained by Ms. Arti Doctor for M/s Chiranjit Basu and Subir Dasgupta. He is a winner of two of his three starts, both over 1200 m.
He may be named Dark Angel, but Claymore's sire is now a grey. Trained by Barry Hills, Dark Angel was a precocious 2YO who won four races including the Shadwell Stud Middle Park Stakes, Gr.1. He did not race at 3 having been retired to Morristown Lattin Stud in Ireland and commenced his career at a modest fee of €10,000. His first few crops have done well with Lethal Force, a Champion Sprinter, Estidhkaar, Alhebayeb, Exogenesis, Heerat, Mecca's Angel and others boosting his stock so that his covering fee has now gone up to €27,500. His filly Stormfly recently won a trial for Irish 1000 Guineas, Gr.1 while Estidhkaar was a close second in Aon Greenham Stakes, Gr.3 at Newbury. The average winning distance of his progeny is 7.3 fur. Dark Angel has had four foals in India of whom older Joleene is a winner over the minimum trip. Two Dark Angel 3YOs, contemporaries of Claymore, are still to race.
Equus Stud has a fair sized contingent of Sadler's Wells mares and the unraced Gavotte is one among them. She cost a mere €7,000 when purchased at Goff's Sale in 2011. Claymore has an Antonius Pius half-sister abroad who is a winner over 2300 m. This is a good running family and the tap-root is Mrs. Butterwick. The brilliant Red Cockade and his Classic winning siblings are from a totally different branch of this family.
TIGER (b c Astronomer Royal - Seasahm by Sahm)
Tiger won on debut as a 2YO and later placed second in Godolphin Barb Million, Gr.3 in his only other start to date. He is trained by L.V.R. Deshmukh and runs for Mr. Syed Aminuddin Zohair and breeder Mr. Nirmal Singh of Hazara Stud.
A member of the powerful Ballydoyle team, Astronomer Royal won three races - at 2, 3 and 4 and the high point of his career came when Colm O'Donoghue bagged the Poule dÉssai des Poulains, Gr.1 astride him. He was retired to Haras de la Reboursiere et de Montaigu in the Orme valley, not far from where the Allied landings took place in World War II. He has since been relocated to Eliza Park Stud in Victoria, Australia where he stands at a fee of Aus $ 7,700. From limited opportunities, the stallion has produced three black-type winners in Stellar Path, Weery and Table Ronde. Tiger is Astronomer Royal's only living foal in India.
Seasahm, who won 5 races at 3 to 5 in U.S.A. including the Princess Elaine Stakes, L, was purchased, like Ifni, by Hugo Merry for Hazara Stud at the Arqana Sale in December 2011 for €17,000. Tiger's full-sister Saxana is unraced in France. Seasahm traces to Paraffin through Chelandry. This is an excellent family, though the mare herself comes from a less exalted branch.
The unbeaten Authoritarian has the best record among the 'got-abroad' winners but at this stage he does not have the halo which Murioi and Be Safe wore as the Bangalore Summer season approached. In the last ten years, there have been eleven 'got-abroads' who have won an Indian Classic or an Invitation Cup. Becket and Smashing, two of those eleven, had not even raced in the first half of the year. So there is time for a star to emerge.
PAST THE POST
The "Sportsmen's Dozen" discussed here were picked out going through the results and there is a likelihood that some 'got-abroad' winner has been missed out. If the inadvertent omission is pointed, it will be rectified promptly.
