By Mahendra Mallya | 25 Apr 2015 | MUMBAI

Col. K S Garcha & trainer Adhirajsingh Jodha leading Make Way For Me (Kavraj Singh Up), winner of The Trainers Trophy Div-2

Followers of favorites ought have profited as six out of the eight races were won by fancied horses. You could make that seven as debutante Make Way For Me (Mizzen Mast – Melody Maker, Gee Stud) etched his way into the betting and pushed out Rapid Girl as the prime fancy. Make Way For Me, trained by Adhirajsingh Jodha unleashed his best in the last 100 meters and that late power thrust simply overwhelmed Scarlet of Hope who held sway right from the start.

Scarlet of Hope had a handy lead coming into the straight and was galloping on vigorously. Rapid Girl moved towards the inside while Make Way For Me launched his attack from the outside. With a furlong to go, Scarlet of Hope was pushing for home and was looking good too. Rapid Girl seemed in futile chase and just when it looked like Scarlet of Hope would fluke it, jockey Kavraj Singh got his mount to accelerate. Make Way For Me responded with an electrifying finish to surge past them and score a fighting win. Scarlet of Hope ended a good second while Rapid Girl was pegged back by Polar Zone who arrived with a late finish.

Champion Jockey P Trevor once again was the shining star of the day. His good form this season has seen him pull off victories with some strong riding and this was in display when he rode hot favorite Magnificence (Arazan – Burning Fire, Exhilaration Stud) to victory in the day’s first race.

She’s An Ace led them into the straight with The Way I Am in second. Magnificence moved up to be third at the turn with Pablito alongside. Into the straight, The Way I Am took charge briefly as She’s An Ace shot her bolt. Soon the new leader was challenged from either side by Pablito and Magnificence, the former getting the rail run. This pair steered clear of the rest and were fighting a pitched battle. Trevor rode hard to ensure Magnificence stayed ahead in the last few strides and there was no narrow miss this time. Magnificence earned her maiden success as Pablito fell short by a neck.

Trevor then partnered another short priced favorite Bidstone Hill (Mull of Kintyre – Indiscretion, Nanoli Stud) with another fine start to finish essay. Trevor guided Bidstone Hill into the lead soon on the jump and had him gallop at a good clip. Abbey improved well from an outside draw to sit on the tail of the leader. However, once in the straight, Abbey drifted out considerably and lost all her chances. Bidstone Hill kicked on well to stay clear of the rest. Abbey recovered the extra ground she had to make owing to her drift and galloped on the outside fence yet finished within ¾ lengths of the winner.

Trevor picked up his third for the day atop even money favorite Polydences (Oratorio – Perfect Polly, Sohna Stud). This too was a gate to post win and clean as a whistle. Polydences marched on ahead with ease and once in the straight looked in fluent motion. She raised the tempo even further in the second half of the straight and won drawing away. Nature Boy struggled to keep up as did the rest, and the fight was on only for the minor placing. La Traviata finished on well to pip Fortune Hunter for the runner-up berth.

Another top-notch jockey A Sandesh scored a back-to-back double and a lucrative one at that. Sandesh first partnered Horse Power (Ace – Tide of Fortune, Poona Stud) to a power-packed win.  Horse Power was another one on the day to push out an ante post favourite Baryshnikov to next in demand and himself donned the favourite tag at 9/4 against at race time. She proved the trend right with able guidance from Sandesh.

Daytona and Wonder Story were at the helm in the homestretch with Horse Power closing in on them rapidly. Just when Daytona got the measure of Wonder Story, Horse Power warmed up well to gather momentum to literally fly in the final 100 meters. Horse Power covered considerable ground with that late dash and managed to win comfortably. Daytona ended a good second Remember The Time too gained ground to peg back Wonder Story for place money.

Essence of Love (Royal Kingdom – Calorescence, Equus Stud) created a small flutter with a scorching late run to win at nourishing odds. It was a case of horses from the back pushing back most off the front runners in the end result. Padmokosa who brought the field home ended up with only one behind. Ancient World too fell considerably back after being prominent until the last 300. National Pride led brifly with Wish Upon A Star coming on his outside and Rock the Turf looking for an opening just behind, when Essence of Love gathered momentum briskly to pass them all with ease. It was all over once Essence of Love arrived and shot ahead in a jiffy. He won with ease and Rock The Turf wriggled out to end second. Favorite Winds of Change ran on to finish in the money.

Helping Hand (Multidimensional – Fingers Crossed, Usha Stud) won handsomely as expected with DK Ashish having no problems in guiding the Imtiaz Sait trainee to a facile win. Shahriyar and Honest Pleasure were disputing the lead in the straight and just when Shahriyar took charge, Helping Hand, who was stalking the two in front, shifted gears to swoop down upon them and then break away to score a comfortable victory. Glorious Opinion was the one to cover a lot of ground to finish a noteworthy second.

Rare And Gorgeous (Noverre – Erina, Sohna Stud) produced an electrifying finish to deny favorite Eternal Royalty any chance of toppling her once she had hit the front. Plan B brought the field homewards and was soon challenged by Rare And Gorgeous, ridden by apprentice Ajinkya. They surged ahead and the Arif Patel ward bounded forward to open up a slender lead. With the others closing in, they looked headed for a fighting finish, but Rare And Gorgeous showed grit and determination to stay ahead and weather the assault that came from Eternal Royalty, the winner sparing a length at the wire. Eternal Royalty, Millenium Falcon and Star finished in a heap in that order.

For the professionals, Trevor earned a treble while jockey Sandesh scored a double.
