Bob Baffert trained American Pharoah was given a gritty ride by Victor Espinoza en-route to a thrilling win in the 141st edition of the G1 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. It was one-three for trainer Bob Baffert with Dortmund ending up third while Simon Callaghan schooled Firing Line made it to the runner-up berth.

Sent off at 3-1, last year’s champion juvenile, American Pharoah settled nicely in third after breaking well from 16 post even as stable companion Dortmund headed to lead the pack. As they came out of the final turn Firing Line stepped up the pressure on Dortmund even as Espinoza got busy on American Pharoah from the outside. Firing Line made a determined bid to hang on to the lead but American Pharoah forced his way to be a length ahead at the wire.

"I feel like the luckiest Mexican on earth," said jockey Espinoza who was winning his third Kentucky Derby after War Emblem and last year's winner California Chrome.. "He's been a special horse since the first day I rode him. He's tremendous - he's got a lot of talent and he just flows over the track. Turning for home I thought I'd got it but I had to ride him a bit - that other horse Firing Line was right by him."
