Trainer AIDAN O’BRIEN continued to hold the aces at the G1 Qipco 2000 Guineas with Ballydoyle’s star campaigner Gleneagles providing his master a record seventh renewal and a first for jockey Ryan Moore at Newmarket.
The son of Galileo went into the race as the favourite despite drifting out to 4-1. Racing on the stands’ side in about fifth early on Gleneagles surged forward confidently when set alight by Ryan Moore approaching the last furlong and responded resolutely to take charge and draw away by 2 1/4 lengths. There was absolutely no threat by the rest of the seventeen opponents even as Territories ran on to be second. Ivawood finished third another three parts of a length adrift.
"He’s a strong traveler and when he gets there, he doesn’t do much," commented trainer O’Brien. "His form is top-class and he’s a very strong and consistent horse at the top level. We always thought he was a miler, as he always had real pace and could have gone over six."
