MAKE BELIEVE LEADS FABRE’S 1-2 IN POULAINS
By Racing Correspondent | 10 May 2015 |
Make Believe won the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains, the French 2000 Guineas in a start to finish bid at Longchamp. The son of Makfi gave trainer Andre Fabre who has a magical touch in Classics his sixth success in the race even as New Bay gave the stable a one-two.
Jockey Oliver Peslier who was tasting his second triumph in the race set out with Make Believe in front right from the start. Aidan O’Brien’s wards Highland Reel and War Envoy along with Kevin Ryan’s Flaming Spear raced close to the leader all the way but once on the stretch they turned out to be no match as Make Believe was still in command and increased the lead towards the finish. Stable companion New Bay who had started off from an outward draw of 16 out of 18 starters came in with a late flourish to be the runner-up ahead of Mr.Owen.
The winning jockey Oliver Peslier said, "He is a horse who is the ideal type to try and make all and I didn't hesitate in trying to do so. He broke well and although he was a little bit keen early I managed to settle him quite quickly. When you get on a roll like that you don't want to stop them and he finished very well."
