Bob Baffert trained American Pharoah trounced his rivals in the 140th running of the G1 Preakness Stakes on a rain soaked track at Baltimore’s Pimlico Race Course and stay on course to be the 12th Triple Crown winner. The Belmont Stakes, the final leg of the Triple Crown coming up in three weeks’ time.
The sky opened up with just about 15 minutes left for the start of the race and the heavy downpour rendered the race track muddy. Jockey Victor Espionza gave all he had on American Pharoah to get to the front and the son of Pioneer of the Nile did respond to his master’s command. Mr.Z rallied in second with the speedy Dortmund in third. Heading past the half mile pole the advantage American Pharoah had established started to diminish with Mr.Z and Dortmund ranging closer. American Pharoah still had enough reserves in him and left them all cold to draw clear and win by a big margin of 7 lengths. Tale of Verve and Divining Rod finished second and third respectively.
"I wasn't going to try to get the lead but I changed my plan after that hard rain and pushed him to get to the front," said Espionza about his change of plans following the torrential rains. "He broke a little tiny bit slow. I didn't want to get behind horses and get dirty but once he got to the lead he was very comfortable. He cruised around at high speed."
"He's just an incredible horse," commented trainer Bob Baffert, winning the middle leg of the Triple Crown for the sixth time. "From day one people were expecting and what he does is amazing. The weather really scared me but great horses do great things and I think he showed that today."
