Drawn unfavourably from 13 in a field of 14, New Bay was settled towards the rear early by Cheminuad with just one runner behind. When the pace began to quicken inside the last two furlongs New Bay showed some remarkable acceleration to sweep past the front runners and held on sportingly by a length and a half from Highland Reel. War Dispatch was third another length and three parts adrift.
"This is unbelievable and a dream," said jockey Cheminaud. "At the beginning of the season, my only target was to lose my claim on the flat and I never imagined winning the Jockey Club."
Trainer Andre Fabre leading in his fourth winner of this Classic said, "He had shown in the Poulains that he has a great turn of foot and we really thought he would stay. He looks as if he will stay even further, so he has plenty of options."
