DETTORI RIDES GOLDEN HORN TO DERBY GLORY
By Racing Correspondent | 07 Jun 2015 |
Golden Horn fashioned an amazing performance to wear the G1 Investec Derby sash at Epsom. It was a second win in the Derby for both the trainer John Gosden and jockey Frankie Dettori. Trainer John Gosden had more reasons to rejoice with his stable ward Jack Hobbs finishing second.
The son of Cape Cross was a late supplement for the Derby with owner Anthony Oppenheimer shelling out £75,000 and the unbeaten Dante winner paid back handsomely with a brilliant performance. "It's such a thrill, it's amazing," said Oppenheimer, who also bred the winner. "I can't really believe it. I have to thank the staff at my stud, everyone there has worked so hard."
Sent off as the favourite at 13-8 Golden Horn was dropped back well by Dettori early to race off the pace. Turning for home Golden Horn was still in 9th almost 10 lengths away from Hans Holbein in the lead. Making a bid from the outside he began to head past a few weakening opponents but still had a task on hand in the last 2 furlongs. Stable companion Jack Hobbs, the 4-1 second favourite shot to take charge with a furlong left and the came Golden Horn and Frankie Dettori charging to settle the issue by a clear3 ½ lengths. Storm The Stars was third another 4 ½ lengths adrift.
"I can’t believe I have won the Derby again," commented a visibly joyous Frankie Dettori. "It’s what dreams are made of and in the last 100 yards I was numb. I knew he was a good horse and I can’t get to the bottom of him--I couldn’t stop him after the race and he’s an unbeaten horse who has won the Derby so it doesn’t get any better. If it wasn’t for John, I wouldn’t have had this second chance. He won the Derby without me and I won it without him and 20 years later, here we are together for the perfect moment."
Trainer John Gosden leading in a 0ne-two in the Derby commented, "Golden Horn was quite keen early and took Frankie on. The last thing I said to Frankie was ride a cool race and he rode a cool race - he waited and waited. He's a proper horse”. On the second, he added, “Jack's run a great race and was beautifully balanced down the hill by William and ran a belter. All being well he will go to Ireland."
