ACAPULCO IS A CLASS APART IN THE QUEEN MARY
By Racing Correspondent | 18 Jun 2015 |
Scat Daddy’s Acapulco showed indications of turning out to be a champion filly when she outclassed her opponents with a thunderous gallop in the G2 Queen Mary Stakes. Trained by Wesley A Ward Acapulco was ridden by one of the best in the business, Ryan Moore.
Acapulco who was slammed down in the betting from 6-1 to 5-2 was a bit lethargic at the start but quickly got into the rhythm to hit the front with the group on the near side as they passed the half-way mark. Jockey Ryan Moore sat motionless all the way and when he did start to ride out with a furlong left, Acapulco drew clear with a scintillating burst of speed. Easton Angel hitherto unbeaten finished second 1 ½ lengths away. Besharah was third another 2 ½ lengths adrift.
“She’s very special, has a great attitude and loads of pace,” commented Moore on the filly. “She wasn’t very quickly away, but cruised up to the lead and had far too many gears for the rest of them. She’s all speed.”
Acapulco is a sweetheart, what a lovely filly,” exclaimed trainer Wesley Ward. “She has immense talent and immense speed and really proved it today. It is a huge relief to get a winner. You don’t want to come in here and go home with your head held low, so to get a winner early on is amazing. I was very disappointed after her first run [she finished third] and I did something unconventional and breezed her right back in seven days time, and it was the most phenomenal breeze I’ve ever had. I think she’s got a big future on turf. She’s a beautiful, gorgeous filly and to look at her you’d think she was four.”
