QUASAR STARTS CAMPAIGN IN RESPLENDENT STYLE

By Ikram Khan | 20 Jun 2015 | BANGALORE

Mr Nirmal Singh & trainer M Narredu leading Quasar (Yash Narredu Up), winner of The Chief Justice's Cup (Gr.3)

Back after his victory in the Indian Turf Invitation Cup,  Quasar started his summer campaign on a winning note. The promising Yash Narredu  under pressure produced a copybook effort  and the star performer delighted Mallesh Narredu  putting the issue beyond doubt in the final furlong.  Quasar 's next target  will be the Maharaja's Cup  where he will be pitted against Be Safe and that contest will  prove to be a good draw.

Tiger Tops hit the front and set the pace for the nine-furlongs event, the Chief Justice's Cup. Yash chose to keep Quasar in a striking position all through the trip while Trevor astride Amazing Grace played the waiting game. The moment Quasar moved up turning for home and seized the initiative it was all over bar the shouting. It was a good clinical performance. Amazing Grace finished second but she is not the same what we got to see last summer.

Like we told you, this summer the small trainers are punching above their weight, another joined the list on Saturday. Nithyanand recorded a good double, first striking through the long pending Great Secret who was a medium of a good gamble and  Expert who was ready to enter the winners’ circle after his noteworthy effort in his last essay. Great Secret won the Ramkirpal Plate in the hands of T S Jodha before Arshad Alam made every post a winning one on Expert in the Aboline Plate run over a sprint. Now that Expert has flashed past the post first  the Nithyanand ward on the strength of this victory looks set to provide an encore.

After Nithya’s  gamble in the opening event, the Ganapathy camp brought off a successful coup on Bold Command in the next event, the Paddiwick Plate run over a mile. The talented son of Arazan  was sweetly fancied by the connections and Bold Command provided his owner, turf baron Dr. M A M Ramaswamy a big reason to smile,  leaving his 11 rivals including the favourite Amazing Charm for dead at the top of the straight. Bold Command and Quasar were the two most impressive winners on the day and the Ganapathy ward on this performance will fancy himself to take a crack in the major plums ahead.

A facile winner in his last essay, Ungoogleable rightly was the overwhelming favourite in the upper division of the M Ali Asker Memorial Trophy and despite the fact that he got lose and bolted without the rider on way to starting gate before he was brought back, the Sandhu ward had enough in him to record his second straight success in the hands of apprentice jockey Munna Alam who is enjoying a good summer.  Munna infact shared the professional honours with Nithyanand booting home the lesser fancied Volcano to his second win in the lower division of the event.

The connections of Volcano who went bang-bang in the betting ring,  the first time out, again fancied his chances and were duly rewarded. The favourite Vigorous failed to display his true potential and that also made the task of Volcano a lot easy though he needed to peg back the belated effort of the friendless Sunstone close home.

Pearl Reward  from trainer Padmanabhan’s yard was one other lesser fancied winner. Zervan hit the front on Pearl Reward soon after the 11 runners came under the starter’s flag for the AMC Gowda Memorial Trophy run over a distance of seven furlongs and never let the initiative slip. Yellow Zone followed the winner home while the even-money favourite Wild Wild Angels produced a below par effort and  eventually finished in the ruck.
