ASSIDUOUS WINS KARNATAKA SUB-AREA CUP

Mr B S Manjunath & trainer SS Attaollahi leading Assiduous (Trevor Patel Up), winner of The Karnataka Sub-Area Cup

Fresh from the success in the Kingfisher summer Derby, Sulaiman Attaollahi and Trevor Patel again combined effectively to win the Karnataka Sub-Area Cup, the plum event on Saturday.  Knocking at the door, the consistent Assiduous (Glory of Dancer – Dance With Style / Nanoli Stud) produced a sparkling gallop to edge out the Sandhu-trained Ungoogleable who narrowly failed to register a hat-trick. Advantageously placed in at the scales, the moody Nimfea headed the field for most part of the trip before Assiduous streaked ahead in the final furlong and then gallantly held on to peg back the belated effort of Ungoogleable. Nimfea finished third ahead of the old at tooth Virat.

The connections of Soviet Union (Glory of Dancer – Soviet Song / Kunigal Stud) brought off a big coupon Soviet Union in the Alekona Trophy run over a distance of 1100 metres. The winner had last won more than a year ago in Mysore. Now under the care of Kishen Thomas the winner after a couple of easy efforts was strongly supported, money pouring on Soviet Union backed down from (7/1) to (16/10) and the public choice romped home to the delight of his supporters. Dignified finished second while Interactive came home third despite jockey B Nayak's inept effort.

Beaten by Supreme Dominator who went out and won again, the Ganapathy-trained Dazzling Bay (Arazan – Attractress / Exhilaration) was again fancied most by the followers of form and the favourite made ample amends returning home a convincing winner of the Buck Passer Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs.  The other fancied runner Marine One who has failed to impress this season finished second while Wings of Fortune took the third spot.

The six furlongs Mount Everest Trophy, a race for maiden three-year-olds was an open affair. The Mumbai hopeful D`Accord making her debut was favourite on the strength of a couple of good performances on the morning trials. But she found it tough to negotiate the conditions and at the end it was six to one shot Ophelia (Ravel – Enchanting Miss / Chhatari Stud) who prevailed edging out Shining Armor at the shadow of the winning post. Forest Hills raced in patches and eventually finished a tame third.

The father-son combination of Satish Narredu and Suraj Narredu combined well to record a popular double, winning both the divisions of Astronomic Plate. Beyond Intensity (Multidimensional – Violet Honey / Usha Stud) who caught the eye in her last essay was confidently plotted by Suraj, racing in a handy second position behind pace setter Major Attraction well into the straight before assuming command and putting the issue beyond doubt in the final furlong.  Cannes impressed most covering good ground in the `run in' home after being hopelessly placed at the top of the straight. Faustina appears to have gone off the boil and it will take time and effort for her to get into the winners' circle.

Sands of Time (Burden of Proof – Indian Style / Kunigal Stud) justified favouritism in the lower division comfortably scoring from Power And Strength and What A Wonder. The last named who went down fighting to Androstos failed to reproduce the effort and that made the task of Sands Of Time simple at end.

In the concluding event, the upper division of the Meydan Plate, the Hidayat Khan schooled Feet On Fire (Diffident – Oojh / Yeravada Stud) shocked the railbirds. Little Brown Jug was backed to the exclusion of the rest but he failed to match strides with the winner who produced a big run on the wide outside to surge past Celestial Storm to land the knock-out blow.

Winner picking in the lower division was tough taking into account that none in the field commanded respect. In the end it was the Prithviraj schooled Flying Bullet (Diffident – Striking Beauty / Yeravada Stud), who had failed twice while carrying the public purse, who reigned supreme. Dancing Laurie who had impressed over a mile long race despite gracing the wrong end of the field took the runner-up berth.
