Trainer S Ganapathy leading Bold Command (Trevor Patel Up), winner of The Jayachamaraja Wadiyar Golf Club Mysore 2000 Guineas (Gr.3)

It was a memorable day as the famous ‘Goldie Brown’ silks representing Dr.M.A.M. Ramaswamy conquered yet another Classic at Mysore. Bold Command (Arazan-Indian’s Feather / Greenfield Stud), trained by S. Ganapathy won the Jayachamaraja Wadiyar Golf Club Mysore 2000 Guineas (Gr.3) and in doing so raised the classic tally of Dr.M.A.M. to a stupendous 600 Classic victories. This is a remarkable achievement in the world of horse racing.

It all started fifty years ago on the 4th of July 1965 at Bangalore, when jockey Pandu Khade rode Silver Jet to Colts’ victory to begin the ‘Classic’ journey. In his tally of 600 Classics, Dr.M.A.M. has the rare distinction to have won every classic race in the country.

Dr. M.A.M. Ramaswamy has been instrumental in personally choosing his horses year after year. What is also well known is that, his inputs to the various trainers across Turf centres have proved invaluable. Most of the trainers readily acknowledge this and also express admiration for his impeccable memory with regard to every horse he owns. Gathering 600 classics is a unique task and only one with a mind for such minute details would possibly end up achieving success of such magnitude. Dr. Ramaswamy beyond doubt, would be the only horse owner in the world to have reached the 600 classic mark.

The Mysore Race Club in a thoughtful gesture acknowledged the amazing feat by presenting a memento to Dr. M.A.M.Ramaswamy on this occasion. Dr. Ramaswamy responded from his residence at Chennai and expressed his gratitude to all the trainers, Jockeys and various stable staff over the years and shared the joy with all of them saying that each one’s contribution was important in achieving this glorious landmark.

To describe the running of the race, New Prince charged ahead to lead as the field was despatched followed by Garuda, Rocket Man, Bold Command, Mogadishu, Brilliant Cut and Blazing Faith in that order. Turning for home Bold Command had gradually moved up to be in striking position from the outside and Trevor decided to shift the gears as they passed the 400 metres board. Bold Command took a lead of nearly two lengths and Brilliant Cut who had improved from behind began to come up threateningly close. The entire grand stand was drawn to the edge of their seats as the two fought out the last 150 metres and Trevor was a treat for the eyes as he pulled off an exceptionally sensational win even as D.K. Ashish rode hard on Brilliant Cut. For the record Mogadishu was third another 4 1/4 lengths away and Garuda finished fourth.

Jockey Trevor rode a well-judged race on Suleiman Attaollahi trained Satellite (Burden Of Proof-Set Alight / Kunigal Stud) to lift the Nargis Darashah Memorial Trophy. Taking off from the gates smartly for the mile race, Satellite settled nicely in third when Ethopian showed eagerness to get to the front and Spinning Chakram fought for her head to be in second. Trevor urged Satellite to get to the lead even before turning for home and rode out to build on that inside the last 400 metres. Naval Glory and Speed Hawk both began to rush from the inside in the last 100 metres but Satellite was safely home by half a length by the time the two closed up. Naval Glory finished second a neck ahead of Speed Hawk. Society Music was third.

Striking View (Arazan-Star Angel / Poonawalla Stud) from the stables of Aravind Ganapathy won the Justice P. Medapa Memorial Trophy. The 3 year old filly being tested over the ten furlongs distance for the first time settled in about fourth while Nanuk call the shots. Entering the home stretch jockey Neeraj Rawal started to ride out and Striking View surged into the lead from the outside. The favourite Turf Tactics came up well from the rear and the two went together throughout the last furlong. Striking View fought hard to keep Turf Tactics at Bay and pulled it off by a neck. What A Wonder and Obelinna Princess finished third and fourth respectively.

Jersey Bride (Burden Of Proof-Shenandoah / Kunigal Stud) which had shifted base from Bangalore recently into trainer P.C. Tejaswi’s stables won the M.K. Srinivas Memorial Trophy. Al Dhama set off on a start to finish bid and Jersey Bid sat well in chase. Approaching the 400 metres board Jersey Bride surged ahead with ease and kicked on with Friends Forever toiling toiling hard in second.Al Dhama ended up third in front of Precious Script. Coffee Time was withdrawn on veterinary grounds near the gates.

The ‘Madame’ siblings won the two divisions of the Margrove Estate Trophy. M. Bobby trained Madame Bovary made it in the higher division while Nikhil Punna’s ward Madame Sultana won the lower division. Madame Bovary (Crown Jewels-Genesis / Noble Stud) warded off the late charge of the favourite All Proof in the lower division. Racing in about fourth, Madame Bovary ranged on strongly from around the runners in front and was well in front by the time they straightened up. The 5 year old bay mare had established a useful lead on the straight. All Proof covered ground from behind and began to inch closer with every stride but Trevor failed on this occasion as Madame Bovary had touched the wire a ‘head’ in front. Flame’s Fury was third many lengths behind.

Jockey Trevor was once again at the receiving end when Madame Sultana (Crown Jewels-Genesis / Noble Stud) pulled off an upset in the lower division, the concluding race of the day. In copy book fashion Madame Sultana tracked the leader till the last 500 metres and surged ahead to get to the front and won warding off from Trevor and Shher Elation. Southern Fantasy rallied on to be third while the early leader Skyjet ended up fourth.

Vishal Yadav trained Vroom Vroom (Chinese Whisper-Hereafter / Paramvir Stud), a maiden from 23 starts surprised everyone with a sizzling gallop to win the Lokapavani Plate, the opener of the day. Bracing the tail end till the last 700 metres Vroom Vroom improved gradually around the field and with a speedy gallop sped past the leader Supreme Strength with a furlong left to pay a whopping Rs.144 for a tenner for win. Napolean Dynamite, Namrattaazz and Supreme Strength filled the board in that order.
