DONALD NETTO TAKES ‘SWEET MARCH’ TO A MILLION

The Hyderabad Monsoon season came to an end on Monday with a card of eight races framed for the day. A majority of the firm favourites took a back seat with horses at nourishing odds holding sway on the concluding day. Laxman Singh bagged the champion trainer award with a tally of 29 wins. Jockey Kuldeep Singh topped the table with 24 wins and apprentice N.S. Rathore was the champion in that category with 13 wins. Quasar, the winner of the President of India Gold Cup and the Golconda St.Leger was adjudged as the champion horse. Par Excellence with four wins from as many starts was declared as the horse of the season. Dr.M.A.M.Ramaswamy was the leading individual owner while Mr.S. Padmanabhan, Mrs.Sharmila Padmanabhan and Col Swapan Bhatra were the leading joint owners.

The Dodla Pratap Chander Reddy Memorial Million, a terms race for 2 years old maiden horses was the highlight of the day. Eight youngsters faced the starter for the 1100 metres scurry and Donald netto schooled turned out to be the best among them, winning it from start to finish. Jockey S Zervan got the chestnut filly to grab the lead from the innermost draw with Manoveg in close attendance. Once they came on to the home stretch Manoveg started to fade out and Sweet March continued to march ahead. Dragonstone set off in chase inside the last 150 metres and Exclusive Wind was also up with a challenge but went wide and lost all its chances. Sweet March won impressively and should have a good winter.

Trainer S.S. Faisal Hassan had a ‘Rare’ double through My Star and I Am Rare both ridden by Akshay Kumar. My Star (Rebuttal-Ganga Purna / Hazara Stud) made a stunning return to form in the Dundoo Ekambar Memorial Cup.  My Star did not have a quick start and stayed in second last till turning for home while Tejaswini with a back breaking weight of 63 kilograms made all the running in front. On the top of the straight My Star was pulled out to make its bid and with a good gallop forged ahead of Tejaswini who held on to the lead till the last 100 metres. Policy Maker came up late to finish second and third respectively from the tiring Tejaswini.

I Am Rare (Ravel-Killarney) was only on her second career start but did well to get to the winner’s enclosure in the Onnu Onnu Onnu Plate. The filly set out in the lead from the word ‘go’ with Professor and Charming Beauty racing close behind. I Am Rare starter to extend the lead and was almost three lengths in front with 400 metres left. The lead began to diminish with City Of Pearls closing up fast towards the closing stages but jockey Akshay Kumar kept riding out I Am Rare to get to the winning post first by quarter of a length. The short priced favourite Charming Beauty finished third ahead of Professor.

It was Time For (some) Fun (Noverre-West With The Wind) for trainer K. Satheesh in the Ivanjica Cup. The filly was held back in fourth while Military Cross led them followed by Karromshade and Gayle Force. Into the last 300 metres the favourite Karromshade was just beginning to get the better of Military Cross when Time For Fun galloped resolutely to shoot ahead go streaking clear. Gayle Force, Karromshade and Green Image finished in that order for the minor placing in a close finish.

Laxman Singh trained Naamdhari (Hurricane State-Alflora) who had found one better in its last two starts did well to win the 2200 metres trip, the Mystical Cup. Naamdhari made a quick move to join the leader Killer Instinct even before taking the final bend and was well ahead as they went past the 400 metres board. The favourite Lightning Streak came charging from the wide outside but Naamdhari passed the winning post safely by half a length. Fair Fax was third and Chocolate Greedy fourth.

K.S.V.Prasad Raju trained Squandeers Square (Mull Of Kintyre-Aureus) won the Forest Treasure Plate. The 5 year old gelding chased the leader Cruiser all the way till the last furlong and with jockey P. Sai Kumar riding hard surged forward near the 100 metres board. Kohinoor Flare rallied late to take the second spot from Cruiser.

D.Netto had saddled Double Charter (Lucifer Sam-Crown Charter) to a maiden win in the opener of the day, the Cape Knight Plate. Racing handily in third along the fence behind Royal Glow and Ryuzaki till the bend, Double Charter was brought out from the outside and the filly galloped resolutely to take charge mid-way up the straight and drew clear. Wonder Eye and Kohinoor Valour finished second and third respectively.

R.H. Sequeira’s Ein Ein Ein (Epicentre-Cannon Glow) scored an upset win to end the season in the higher division of the Blue Ice Plate. Taking a smart jump from draw one, Ein Ein Ein held the advantage close to the fence all the way and won easily with Kohinoor Thunder in chase. Military Belle finished third.
