SHROFF RULES COMPANY INDIAN 1000 GUINEAS DAY

-

Pesi Shroff had a fruitful day leading in four winners including the Eat India Company Indian 1000 Guineas (Gr1) on Sunday. Shroff started his streak of wins with Apache (Ad Valorem – Chateau Beach, Hazara Stud) as the 5/4 favourite obliged his large number of supports without undue anxiety.

Apache chose to stay in second spot as Papakura was pushed to hit the front. Congressional, Simply Sweet and Classic Moment followed in single file until the turn.

Apache dismissed Papakura once in the straight and took charge from the 400. Congressional made an all out effort to chase down Apache. Simply Sweet and Classic Moment were not too far behind. However, Apache kicked on gamely under jockey Trevor’s competent riding and always kept a safe distance from the rest all the way. Congressional could not improve enough to bother the winner, but did well to ward off Classic Moment and Simply Sweet for the runner-up berth.

In the very next race, Shroff gave the leg-up to jockey Akshay atop on-money favourite Denny Crane (Arazan – Blue Horizon, Poona Stud). Denny Crane is big made and that makes him look a touch in the paddock. Perhaps that was the reason the bookmakers offered close to even money at race time.

The meaty Denny Crane however showed ample nimbleness while darting into the lead soon on start. The favourite sustained his lead and once in the straight, Akshay, going hands and heels, built a handy lead approaching the distance post. The Magician got past Grand Vitesse but could never catch up with Denny Crane. Excelonce warmed up late and covered considerable ground. However, Denny Crane was elusive and was easing up closer to the winning post. Excelonce, though, managed to pip The Magician for the runner-up berth.

The Champ (Kodiac – Mink Glove, Sohna Stud) was another one from Shroff’s yard at cramped odds. Trevor had to use all his riding skills to get past a persistent Pearl Secret who fought it out all the way. Pearl Secret with Sandesh in the saddle led the field into the straight with The Champ lurking close behind. The Champ came up to challenge the leader with 300 to go but found Pearl Secret resisting in a competent manner. Trevor then had to match the skill of the other champion jockey and the duo were battling stride for stride. The Champ finally wrested the initiative in front of the Grand Stands and carved out a narrow win. Godsent improved positions to be third in the straight and did well compared to the rest, staying well ahead of Sensex who ended a tame fourth seven lengths behind Godsent.

Trevor too scored a treble with Siddhi (Princely Heir – Career collection, Dashmesh Stud) in the last race of the day. Trevor had to improve positions and he did so steadily to be in third round the turn. Ice Affair was in the lead and Siddhi crept up to challenge with a furlong and half to go. Ice Affair put up a gritty fight before surrendering. Siddhi took a bit too get past the leader but once he did, he bounded forward in the end and won drawing away. Ice Affair ended a good second ahead of Name of the Game.

Joss (Arazan – Sprugli, Poona Stud) took advantage of the rail run to slip into the lead at the precise moment and then galloped on gamely to ward off a late bid from favourite Lavender Blue. The mile and quarter race heated up once leader Unico Corazon took the turn wide letting Uncle Scrooge take charge at the turn. Uncle Scrooge found the going tough and was listless after taking the lead and soon lost out to Joss slipping in from the inside. Lavender Blue took rather too long to find his feet by then Joss had bounded forward a couple of lengths. Joss kicked on and all Lavender Blue could do was cut down the margin of victory. Oreius improved commendably to take the third spot from Uncle Scrooge. Jordana squandered an opportunity and fell back after being prominent early in the straight.

Arak (Jeremy – Alassio, Nanoli Stud) made an impressive debut as a two-year-old winning with a good three-length margin. Taking over the running on settling down, Arak showed a clean pair of heels once they turned for home. Star Comrade was hard at work but his chase was futile as Arak romped home in style and has a promising career ahead.

Fabio (Mull of Kintyre – Tsesebe, Mebajeona Stud) was another debutant to score, but had to work a lot harder to earn his first win. Voulez Vous led them all the way into the straight and seemed to be on course. Fabio switched to the outside and took the gap between Voulez Vous and Star Councillor. Flashy Wings joined the battle with about 300 to go. Voulez Vous galloped hard to maintain his lead, but Fabio and Flashy Wings were wearing her down. Fabio shifted out yet managed to put his neck in front at the wire. Flashy Wings managed to pip Voulez Vous for the second, but her jockey lodged an objection against SJ Sunil for veering out and taking Flashy Wings wider. The objection was rightly overruled.

Fast Lady (Kheleyf – Classical Elegance, Sohna Stud) lived up to her name and arrived at a good clip to snatch victory close home. Iridescence showed no zip as he led the field home and then had nothing much to offer. Shanai got past him from the outside and Remembrance of You from the inside. Shania appeared to have had the measure of both her rivals when Fast Lady with Suraj Narredu up arrived with a strong gallop. Once she came on the scene, she looked too good taking the leaders by storm to win handsomely, although by half length. Shania got close but had to be content with the second spot ahead of Remembrance of You.

For the professionals, Pesi Shroff saddled four winners, jockey Trevor scored a treble, while jockey PS Chouhan rode out a double.
