It was jockey KPG Appu who stole the limelight on Saturday at Mahalaxmi. Appu started off with a convincing win in the day's first race when he partnered joint favourite Tribal Warrior (Polar Glow shared the status) to a powerful victory over seven furlongs. Acceptance hit the front soon on start, Princess Samerah and Polar Glow followed close behind, Tribal Warrior was next, Item Bomb and Thundering Hero were in the rear. Acceptance brought the field homeward and past the 400 Metres, Princess Samerah (Sheikh) got her past the leader but had Tribal Warrior sitting on her tail. Polar Glow was stuck on the rail and a passage there was certainly going to be tight. Princess Samerah and Tribal Warrior fought past the distance post and the Princess reluctantly let the Warrior get past her under 100 Metres from the winning post. Appu did not have it easy and had to ride all out and finally raced past the stubborn Princess Samerah to win by a length. Item Bomb made progress in the latter half of the straight to finish third. Polar Glow switched to the outside but could only get past Acceptance. The feature event – Maharaja Sir Harisinghji Trophy (Gr 3) was Appu's next conquest astride Beyond Belief. The Imtiaz Sait trainee gelled well under Appu's partnership and won from the word go practically untroubled. The son of Warrshan – Leit Motif spurted to a comfortable lead on jumping out and maintained a safe distance from his rivals all through. He got only better in the straight and as they neared the distance post it was clear that Cotswold Arms and The Hurricane were in futile chase. The best they could bargain for would be the runner's up spot. The Hurricane who quickened well in the final furlong had no option but to settle for the next best position and did so at the cost of Cotswold Arms who went all out but found the going tough in this superior company. Beyond Belief was a cut above and stamped his superiority in no uncertain terms proving that the mile is well within his compass although he set his own leisurely pace. The Hurricane was better than his last start and now looks poised to regaining his old form. Appu ended his lucrative day with another victory astride Morpheus in the last race. Appu repeated his earlier race's strategy and hit the front soon on settling down. Patek Philippe (Kharadi) was not too quick to improve position and was also subjected to make his bid on the wide outside. In the straight, Morpheus raised a handy lead and kicked on powerfully and past the distance post and Appu ensured that his rivals would need a tremendously powerful gallop to account for Morpheus. That did not happen although Patek Phillipe gained a lot of momentum in the final 100 Metres but this was only good enough to cut down the margin of victory and not to register one. Patek Phillipe, however, gave a clear glimpse of his galloping prowess and this run was suggestive enough to follow him in Pune. Top Action ran on to take the third spot without troubling the top two. Jockey Vikram Jodha shattered trainer Antia's dream when he rendered a horrific, incompetent ride on The Dreamer. The Dreamer jumped out shoddily banging horses on either side, then Vikram got his grip off the stirrup and looked woeful but managed to settle down and pace with Bridge Too Far, the leader and Mister Fixit alongside. In the Straight, Brodge Too Far looked good and accelerated ahead, Mister Fixit looked pale and The Dreamer was warming up. Catalunya (Chinoy) who was nowhere till then, started to get into the thick of things. Bridge Too Far, meanwhile was desperately trying to keep as The Dreamer was closing in and Catalunya was looking threatening. Just a little while back (Near 300m), Vikram dropped the whip and with that the race. The Dreamer got past the leader but Catalunya was right up and without the whip, The Dreamer was hapless. Catalunya got the verdict by a head in the last couple of strides. It was a totally unprofessional ride by Vikram and he was the cause for The Dreamer to end a close second. Her Excellency Trophy was a well fought out affair. Encouragement, Phi and The Boss were engaged in a thrilling fight. Quaoar was the one to lead the field, Encouragement settled on the rails a close fourth, Phi and The Boss were in the rear end. In the Straight, Quaoar soon surrendered to Bu Attifel and Encouragement (CS Jodha) started to flex her muscles. Phi, on the wider side came alongside and The Boss who was the last one to turn for home poked through the middle. They were heading for a three pronged finish and Encouragement enjoyed a slender advantage which CS Jodha managed to hang on to till the very end. Phi tried her best but could not get that little extra to seal the issue and The Boss only had himself to blame and had been more prominent at the half was stage the result could have been different. Encouragement though, surely would not be complaining. Spirited Star was the firm favourite but at race time Apollotina came in for some very strong support. However, it turned out to be a one horse race as Apollotina (Rajendra) carried on from a good, alert start and posted a facile almost ridiculously easy one sided victory. Spirited Star completely lacked the spirit and was off the bridle even before they turned for home. Apollotina, who was leading by just a couple of lengths at the turn stretched further and further away and won by a street. Spirited Star laboured to the second spot and the rest just ran on aimlessly. To sum up the day, Beyond Belief was the most impressive winner of the day. Can repeat in a 7 or maximum 8 furlongs race. Patek Philippe is the one to benefit from this suggestive run. Princess Saamerah can be a safe place bet. The Dreamer to be persisted with over 5 furlongs only. Catalunya can take on a similar opposition. The Boss should score early in Pune. Apollotina style is suited for longer distances. The day belonged to jockey Appu who scored a fine treble. Trainer Faisal Abbas scored a lucrative double.
