Mr Chaduranga Kanthraj Urs & Col.Swapan Bhadra & trainer S Padmanabhan leading Iron Will (David Allan Up), winner of The Kabini Trophy

Back after winning the Ultra Indian Derby in style while delivering a kick in the pants of the many pros and the know it all Mumbai pundits who build up a hype on the Mumbai contestants and ignore the credentials of the many outstation star performers, leading trainer Padmanabhan and Scottish professional David Allan maintained their winning streak, striking  through the six to one shot Iron Will in the Kabini Trophy. The lucky Col.Swapan Bhadra who owns a share in the triple Derby winner Desert God led in Iron Will with another sporting owner Chaduranga Kanthraj Urs who was delighted with the performance of the son of Arazan  from the Poonawalla Stud Farm.

Kanthraj was gung-ho on the chances of Iron Will despite the fact that the Sulaiman camp were moral on Captain Morgan, full brother of Admirality but the captain after tracking the more experienced and more importantly more willing Iron Will failed to match strides with the winner who made every post a winning one with a degree of comfort. Pallas finished second ahead of Captain Morgan who will prove to be a different proposition after his maiden run.

Next, the Padmanabhan camp strongly fancied the talented Sun Moon And Stars in the upper division of the Bharachukki  Plate but the Pathy owned filly much to the disappointment of her supporters failed to make an impression, bursting a blood vessel during the sprint event.  The ten to one shot Country’s Crown from Satish Narredu’s yard  recorded a shock win pegging back the start to finish effort of the topweighted Areca Wonder while the speedy Downton Abbey took the third spot. Areca Wonder, it is clear is not relishing the backbreaking weight on his back and he will do well if his connections chose to race him in the upper class where he will be advantageously placed in at the scales.

Suraj Narredu, who partnered Country’s Crown  next booted home the four to one joint favourite Summer Dawn in the Nethravathi Trophy, the plum event run over a mile. The winner stole a march at the distance post and easily held off the challenge of Dazzling Bay who impressed most while finishing a game second in the hands of apprentice jockey Sunil Samson who was not equal to the task, failing to gain a good position all through the backstretch and as a result, Dazzling Bay needed to travel all the way wide and this cost her dear at end.

In line for a treble, Suraj was at his best on the favourite Sir Majestic in the concluding event, the lower division of the Bharachukki Plate run over a sprint. After the second in demand at the betting ring, Mariko showed the way for most part of the trip, Suraj packed punch on Sir Majestic to streak ahead and peg back the gallant effort of Spanish Moon and David Allan close home. Life Awaits caught the eye while finishing fourth and it will pay to follow this Sriram ward when saddled next.

The lesser fancied Jersey Wonder from B Puttanna’s yard floored his 11 rivals in the upper division of the Chamundi Plate in the hands of Trevor Patel. The winner is in rousing form and is poised to compete a hat-trick of wins if his trainer manages to judiciously place him for his next strike. Back Of Beyond from Prasanna Kumar’s yard was followed most in this event but he found Jersey Wonder too hot to handle, finishing a game second. Back Of Beyond retains form and fitness and it will not be long before he earns his cornbill this season.

The lower division of the event was claimed by the ten to one shot Montenegro from trainer Irfan Ghatala’s yard. The much improved Ahsan Qureshi  confidently piloted the shock winner upsetting the applecart of the favourite Everybreakingwave from the stables of Arjun Manglorkar.

The topweighted Time And Space from trainer Mahesh’s yard proved too good in the Murudeshwara Plate run over a sprint, cruising home in the hands of apprentice jockey Surya. The winner is on top of her game and is set to provide an encore.

The opening event, the lower division of the Gaganachukki Plate saw big money pour in on the Lokanath-trained Cullinan but the public choice in his attempt to make every post a winning one went down to the unfancied Happy Hours who produced a winning gallop in the final furlong to spoil Cullinan’s party.

The upper division too produced a shock result, I Smile from trainer Sharath Kumar’s yard romping home in the hands of another apprentice M Naveen. Anfield did well to gain the runner-up spot while the favourite Youre Ashwashakthi  could only take the third spot.
