MULTITUDE LIFTS GOVERNOR’S CUP IN STYLE

By Epsom Ace | 02 Mar 2016 | KOLKATA

Mr D A Nanda & trainer Vijay Singh leading Multitude (P Kamlesh Up), winner of The Governor's Cup

Riding a copybook race, jockey Kamlesh atop Multitude followed pace-setting stablemate Falcon till the straight before striding clear for a comfortable victory in The Governor’s Cup. The colt by Multidimensional out of Haedi (Usha Stud) closed as the 14/10 favourite and did not disappoint his followers.

The other highlight of the day was the running of The Grand Annual Handicap – a handicap mile race for three-year-olds. It was a poor field of eight runners and none of the public fancies had the potential to get close to the low-weight front-runner Dixie Diamond who made every post a winning one in the hands of Ashhad Asbar. The Bath-trained colt by Sedgefield out of Dixie Dahlin (Jai Govind Stud) showed that he is very comfortable over a mile.

Jockey Asbar thus completed a double, having won a difficult race astride Rutherford Alford - trained Cacharel (Burden Of Proof – Chilandrina / Kunigal Stud). After a tardy beginning, the filly was allowed to settle in mid-division before being switched to the inside in the straight. She moved well under the whip thereafter. Avilome Vilome was the best of the rest.

The afternoon commenced on a quiet note as champion jockey Christopher Alford guided home Bath-trained Winning Fortune (Oath-Moneypenney/ Pratap Stud) to her fourth consecutive victory this season. The filly was held in check on this occasion while Annie Oakley called the shots. As is his wont, Alford chose the rails after the turning for home and pulled away from his nearest rival for a fairly comfortable triumph.

The Bruckner Cup was probably one of the most exciting races of the afternoon. Adrestia closed as the piping hot on-money public choice but the filly ran a lacklustre race and failed to place. It was Malibu who embarked on a start-to-finish mission, but his effort  came to nought when challenged by the consistent Duke Of Earl (Neeraj Rawal up). The Daniel David-trained colt by Noverre out of Sharatila (Sohna Stud) thus completed a hat-trick of wins.

David completed a double when Desert Fox (Burden Of Proof – Arabian Rose/ Kunigal Stud) landed the Wheels Handicap in the hands of MF Ali Khan who had replaced Neeraj after the latter suffered a fall from Yamazaki one race earlier. Desert Fox followed Athletico till the distance post and then pulled away before being challenged by the hot favourite Mizuno. At the wire, a short-head separated the duo.
