MELINDA DAZZLES AGAIN TO WIN STORM AGAIN TROPHY

By Mahendra Mallya | 16 Apr 2016 | MUMBAI

Trainer C D Katrak leading Melinda (A Sandesh Up), winner of The Storm Again Trophy

Melinda (Dancing Forever – Superlative, Hazara Stud) continued her winning streak scoring an impressive three-in-a-row while winning the Class I Storm Again Trophy with ease. The Katrak ward stayed well behind as Jigsaw cut a decent pace attempting it start to finish. Phenomenal Memory kept tabs on the leader all the way, while Melinda ambled in third with Rodeo not looking too zestful at any stage.

Jigsaw entered the straight with a handy lead and held Phenomenal Memory who was closest to him. Melinda had ground to cover and she did so at her own will. Sandesh put her in top gear approaching the distance post and Melinda when opened up throttle, she bounded forward powerfully. Within split seconds, she was up and ahead leaving the rest panting. Melinda lined-up her third successive win each better than the previous one. Jigsaw ran well but seemed a trifle over-raced, showing little sheen in his finish. Phenomenal Memory finished close behind Jigsaw.

Trainer Malesh Narredu and his son jockey Yash then took center stage to score thrice in the day, starting off with an emphatic win with Miss Arazan (Arazan – Strawberry Fields, Poonawalla Stud). It was third time lucky for Miss Arazan who came into her own after two rather indifferent starts, running second in both her earlier outings. This time however, Miss Arazan was dominating right from the word go. She took off at the start and led comfortably with Copenhagen in chase. The race was reduced to a one-horse contest as Miss Arazan simply sped away on turning for home. She raced straight like an arrow unlike the last time and Yash only had to guide her on. She accelerated fluently and won by a huge margin.

If the odds on Miss Arazan was cramped, then Be Cautious didn’t offer much more either and even at 6/10 there were takers alright. It looked a race for the taking as Be Cautious (Moss Vale – Key To Luck, Sans Craintes Stud) sped past Zahrazan to lead the field with Wind Craft not too far behind. Be Cautious quickened after turning for home and appeared to be on course to score with a measure of comfort. However, in the last 100 meters, Wind Craft drew closer and flew towards the finish. Fortunately for the followers of Be Cautious, Wind Craft fell agonizingly short of causing an upset. Magnum Opus did well to pip Palace girl for third.

The Narredus rounded off by winning the last race of the day with debutante Arabelle (Arazan – Starcent, Poonawalla Astonish Stud) opening his account with an impressive victory. Yash was quick on the draw and sent Arabelle into the lead and never looked back. Arabelle galloped fluently all through and Rock and Rio had no chance to even offer a challenge at any stage. Arabelle is speedy and was perfectly tuned to make an impact on debut.

Sans Peur (Admiralofthefleet – Sans Pareil, Kunigal Stud) finally came good and scored her maiden win which was long overdue. Sans Peur settled in the mid-bunch all the way until the turn as Aeolus Maximus led them homewards. She’s An Ace shot into the lead soon on turning for home and was galloping well. Top Wizard was struggling to keep up, while Lucky Strike was progressing along the rails. Sans Peur arrived with a thunderous run and when she started to accelerate, it was all over.  She tore away from the pack and won easing up. Lucky Strike ran on to finish second closely followed by Jeena and She’s An Ace.

Nascar (Phoenix Tower – Starlit Princess, Manjri Stud) won readily from the word go. Nascar capitalized on his flying start and kept at a terrific pace all through. Inside the homestretch, Nascar got even faster as he stayed well ahead of the rest going at a good clip. He looked the winner long way from home with apprentice Raghuveer Singh focused to the task. Romantic Lass fought off the late finishing Valentino to take the runner-up berth.

Koal (Oath – Wanasah, Pratap Stud) topped in the day’s first race setting up a nice stretch run after staying in the well behind the front bunch for most of the way. Allegiance brought the field into the straight and didn’t last long. Limekilns made a dash to the front and led approaching the distance post. Koal was well-ridden by Bhawani Singh, switching lanes and then pouncing on the front runners to draw away from Limekilns in front of the Grand stands. Koal pulled away to win convincingly with Limekilns finishing on second. Wizard of Odds ended with a good finish to pip Allegiance for the third place.

For the professionals, trainer Malesh Narredu saddled a fine treble with his son Yash piloting all three.
