RIO ROJO WINS THE ARMY CUP

K.S.V.Prasad Raju trained Rio Rojo (Tejano-Auberge) successfully completed an encore in the Army Cup, a 2000 metres trip for horses in category II at Hyderabad. Rio Rojo, a runaway winner in its last start over a mile was the second in demand for the extended trip while Western Wind garnered maximum support in the betting. Rio Jojo shifted gears early to lead the pack and kept the lead till the finish. Tiger was in chase all the way but gave up mid-way up the straight. Western Wind rallied on to take the second spot ahead of Junior. Tiger finished fourth.

Laxman Singh schooled Naazaan (Whatsthescript-Quiet Lane) hit the bull’s eye in the Noble Quest Cup, a mile trip for maiden 3 year olds only. Naazaan was sent off at 7-1 while the main betting revolved around Ashwa Ashoka and Princess Of Dreams. Ashwa Ashoka started off at half money but drifted out to close at ‘Evens’ while Princess Of Dreams closed at 2-1. Silver Dollar went on a start to finish bid with Seven Colours close behind and Naazaan chasing the duo. Nearing the final furlong pole Silver Dollar veered out alarmingly and grabbing the opportunity jockey T.S.Jodha sent Naazaan to the front. Galloping well Naazaan stayed ahead by 2 ¾ lengths while Silver Dollar, Monte Rosa and Ashwa Ashoka finished in that order in a close finish.

M.Sathyanarayana trained Wind Zoom (Tariq-Mathematica) that was improving placing over the last two starts came good to win the higher division of the Dashmesh Stud Plate. Racing a handy third early Wind Zoom improved gradually and was in the lead as the field of eleven straightened up for home. On the straight apprentice K. Sai Kiran kept riding out and the 5 year old stretched out well to wrap it up by two lengths. Blue Eyed Babe charged in late to beat Aston Doulton for the second place.

Jack Sparrow (Hymn-Naaina) from R.H.Sequeira’s stables turned out to be the biggest upset of the day in the lower division. Jack Sparrow took a smart jump from an outward draw and set out to lead the pack. On the straight Jack Sparrow was joined by Baashagar and the two went all out. Jack Sparrow with apprentice Koushik kicked on and staved off the stiff challenge of Baashagar. Net Champ was only third ahead of Italian Cypress.

Trainer Shamsuddin sent out Prudently Perfect (Win Legend-Ma Baker), a 10-1 shot to score a maiden win in the Rave Review Cup. Prudently Perfect slipped into the lead approaching the mile marker and was never headed. Rose ‘D’ Mumtaz warmed up late to get the better of Buckshee for the runner-up berth. Chocolate Greedy finished fourth.

K.V.Srinivas trained Gangadhar (Samhoon-Ganga Divine) put its neck ahead at the all important end to win the Divine Dreams Plate in a blanket finish involving five horses. Approaching the last furlong Aragonda Princess and Big Flash were battling it out in front with Dolce and Gangadhar closing up. Within the last 100 metres almost four runners were in a line and the race looked open. Gangadhar lunged ahead in the dying moments to neck out Big Flash at the wire. Aragonda Princess, Dolce and Miracle King were all in the same frame in that order.

K.Satheesh trained Ice Cave (Selkirk-West With The Wind) that had won only once from 27 starts was sent off as the favourite in the division II of the Kohir Plate and the 5 year old did well to justify the support. Zensational set off in the lead and Ice Cave after a good start settled to track the leader. Entering the home stretch Ice Cave surged ahead of Zensational without any fuss and kicked on gamely to win. Danielle came in late to beat Zensational for the second place. Royal Express finished fourth.

L.V.R.Deshmukh trained Coruba (New Famous-Metaxa) opened its account in the third division of the race. The 4 year old filly raced in about fourth or fifth while Steyn Memories led the pack from the front. As they straightened up for home Coruba charged from the extreme outside and sped past the front runners. Lengthening its strides in the last furlong Coruba extended the lead to five lengths. Steyn Memories held on to the second place from Hard Fought. Cirillo finished fourth.
