DENNY CRANE SWAMPS OPPOSITION

By Mahendra Mallya | 15 Dec 2016 | MUMBAI

Trainer P Shroff leading Denny Crane (Neeraj Rawal Up), winner of The Shantidas Askuran Trophy

Denny Crane (Arazan - Blue Horizon, Poona Stud) justified the cramped odds and thrilled his supporters by dishing out a fluent gallop leaving his opponents panting for breath in trying to make a race of it. Denny Crane, trained by Pesi Shroff and partnered by Neeraj Rawal, shot out of the gates and led the field early with Nascar a close second. On turning for home, Denny Crane gained in momentum and established a winning lead in no time. He sped away effortlessly and carried on to win by a handsome margin. Nascar kicked on and stayed put in second to grab the runner-up berth despite having broken a blood vessel. Denny Crane looked exceptionally good and can provide an encore.

Palatial (Pivotal - Pink Palace, Bhaktawar Stud) was another one who won with a bit to spare to claim the Director General of Police Trophy taking charge early into the straight. Anteros attempted different tactics and lead from the gates only to surrender the lead on entering the straight. Palatial improved to move alongside Anteros at the turn and then surged forward to put the issue beyond the rest. Multiglory  and to an extent Dancing Lord tried to get to Palatial midway in the straight, but Palatial, also ridden by Neeraj Rawal, would have none of it and bounded away to score by two lengths. Multiglory wrested the second spot beating Dancing Lord to third.

Jockey P Trevor scored a lucrative double too with the well backed Name of the Game (Glory of Dancer - Felicitad, Capricorn Stud) and later with Sensex (Arazan - Vindication, Poona Stud). Name of the Game, trained by C Rajendra proved too good for his rivals and pulled off a neat start-to-finish victory without encountering any niggle. Trevor charged to the front soon on start and worked up a good pace to gallop away all the way and score a stylish victory. Name of the Game looked in fine fettle in the paddock and true to her looks outpaced her rivals with a dominating performance that may see her score again in her next. She was always clear of competition and won by close to three lengths. Smart Choice edged out The Big Revival, the latter looks like coming to hand and giving his best performance till date.

Trevor struck again with Imtiaz Sait  trained Sensex with a sound finishing gallop. Golden Hymn led them until the straight and soon Marvel took over. Alien, the favourite was right up there but failed to quicken and was ridden all out. Sensex started to improve positions up the straight and warmed up nicely past the distance post and scooted away from the bunch to score easily. Aeolus Maximus came with a powerful finish but he was way too late, yet did well to finish close behind the winner. he was easily the fastest finishing runner of them all and should be in the mix the next time out. Alien was beaten third.

Mizilla Gold (Gaswar - Mizillabalck, Sahgal Stud) from Altaf Husain's yard got the nod in a nicely timed finish to prop up just n time to win a four-way photo finish. The final furlong was a cavalry charge with the led changing with the blink of an eye. Baryshnikov, Speedo and Zadora were giving it all when Mt Tianmen joined them and wrested the lead. Soon Mizilla Gold with apprentice Akshay Gaekwad arrived with a strong bid and joined the fight. Mizilla Gold had to cover some ground and she did so with a sustained gallop managing to pip Mt Tianmen on the post. Zadora edged out Speedo for place money. Hot favourite Lady Coachman found herself behind horses and a rough passage caused her a check or two, that possible breaking her rhythm and she was in no position to recover from that jolt. She had a chance to make a recovery in the straight, but then it is not easy to restart and gallop smoothly particularly in a big field. Her run hence, is best ignored.

Jockey S Zervan picked u his first double for the season and looked in good touch. His second was over a much better horse in Sherlock (Holy Roman Emperor - Connessa, Manjri Stud) as he pulled off a classy start-to-finish victory providing the Pesi Shroff ward his maiden success. He was off quickly and settled down to gallop at his own pace. Reds Revenge kept on the heels of Sherlock until the turn with the rest not too far behind. On entering the straight, Sherlock freewheeled his way forward adding distance to her rivals. None seemed fast enough to catch up and Sherlock won easing up. His Master's Vice improved towards the end nosing out Reds Revenge to finish second.

Zervan really had to sweat it out to put it across a determined Mythical Sunrise in the day's opener. Mythical Sunrise raced up in front behind leader Magic Vision until the turn and took over soon after. She seemed to be going well and Diwali Lights (Tariq - Revived Up, Equus Stud) was seen labouring up to challenge. Mythical Sunrise did everything right all the way until the HJ Antia trained Diwali Lights lit up for the final assault and wore down the leader to win by a narrow margin.

Tchibouela (Arazan - Mix Me Up, Villoo's Greenfield Stud) achieved his maiden success in a tight contest with half a dozen scrambling towards the winning post fighting each other off in the final furlong. Tonteria had wrested back the lead from Country's Empress and had Bohemian alongside. Tchibouela caught up with the trio and was making his presence felt. Isinit too was up for the chase and moved up between horses. In the final few strides, Tchibouela got the measure of them all and darted ahead to score by a length from Isinit. Tonteria ended third beating Star Ace who finished on well.

For the professionals, trainer Pesi Shroff saddled a double, while jockeys P Trevor, Neeraj Rawal and S Zervan scored a double each.
