By Mahendra Mallya | 05 Feb 2017 | MUMBAI

Mr Mehernosh H Deboo & trainer P Shroff leading Myrtlewood (P Trevor Up), winner of The R N Kanga Gold Trophy (Gr.3)

Hot favourite Myrtlewood (Multidimensional – Adamile, Usha Stud) completed the formality of going about her gallop and bounce back to winning ways after a slight stutter from her Classic conquering tenure last year. The classy filly did a smooth job of accounting for her two rivals and set about her task at the business end of the race. Airco guided the three-horse field into the straight and bowed out as Myrtlewood sped past to draw away from the duo. Jockey Trevor had little to do as Myrtlewood hurtled towards the winning post on her own and won the RN Kanga gold Trophy (Gr3) without having to push herself too hard. Be Fifty Two was too far off to offer any challenge ending a tame second.

Jockey Trevor picked up an impressive four winners starting with Myrtlewood. His second win came astride the well-backed Sussex Pride (Sussex – Moneypenny, Pratap Stud) claiming the Sshaawn’s Million in a thrilling finish.

Knight’s Quest galloped freely right from the start and led them into the straight. Firenze started to improve and joined the leader, soon Sweeping Move started to draw closer and challenge the front runners. She had barely taken over when Sussex Pride arrived with a sustained gallop with Trevor on board. Sweeping Move was not one to give in easily and made Sussex fight the final few strides. Sussex Pride, trained by Subhag Singh stepped up speed to finish with a sustained run and peg back Sweeping Move to win with a narrow margin.

Trevor then guided debutante Awesome Hooves (Phoenix Tower – Dance to the Tune, Manjri Stud) to a memorable win. Awesome Hooves, trained by Shazaan Shah was not too prominent until into the straight. Wild Fire brought the field homewards and was soon overtaken by Benefactor, who assumed charge and shaped up well getting into top gear. Awesome Hooves arrived with a spirited run to tackle Benefactor in the final furlong, before unleashing a powerful burst to win pulling away. Benefactor ended a good second and will live to fight another day. Roosvelt ended an easy third and is one to note.

Trevor rounded off the day with another thumping win astride Sanjay Kolse trained Allora (China Visit – Serrafina, Usha Stud). Sitting close up with the front runners, Allore improved rapidly in the straight to get past them all and take charge early in the straight. She broke away building up a handy lead and left it to others to catch up. Benezeer and Magical Memory went all out in chase but neither could get past Allora who had a good momentum going to achieve her second win on the trot. Benezeer fell short by half a length and Magical Memory was another ¾ L behind third. Turf Dancer galloped on fastest finishing an eye-catching fourth.

Abbey (Phoenix Tower – Attune, Manjri Stud) trained by Faisal Abbas built on his winning form to get one in the higher class to score his second win on the trot. Abbey took off at a good clip and led them into the straight. She had Serenita and Celtic Prince threatening her lead from either side, but jockey CS Jodha egged her on to sustain her run all the way to the winning post. Serenita did try and even got alongside but her challenge fizzled out when it mattered most. Celtic Prince on the other hand was more persistent, but failed to get past after looking like doing so strides before the wire.

Perfect Star (Excellent Art – Free Radical, Poonawalla Astonish Stud) showed a lot of resolve and improvement over his debut run and made this one count to bring up his maiden win in his second essay.

Emotionless brought the field into the straight with Macgyver in second along with Admo and Zanara. Perfect Star made rapid progress on straightening up and arrived with giant strides to get past the lot in front and stretch away fluently to score an impressive win without being challenged. Lord of the Sea improved from way behind to progress well but found the winner too good. We Break the Rules was another one who rose from the rear to take the place money.

Raees (Sedgefield – Lost Perfection, Jai Govind Stud) added one more to his win tally with a relatively easy win. Settling in the mid-bunch all the way until the straight, Raees moved up soon on turning for home. Imitation Game had led them into the straight but fell back once challenged by Sovereignsky who flattered to deceive. Soon Raees powered his way to the front and that was it. He won unchallenged and the fight was on only for the minor places. Raees won with something in the saddle and by a comfortable margin as well. His Master’s Vice finished on purposefully to take the runner-up spot from Sanam.

For the professionals, jockey P Trevor had a superlative day with four wins, while jockey CS Jodha scored a lucrative double.
