The Sulaiman Attaollahi-trained Captain Morgan emerged the new `Maharaja’ winning the prestigious Maharaja’s Gold Cup in emphatic fashion on Sunday. The Pesi Shroff schooled Mathaiyus on the strength of his last victory and the fact that the Pesi wards were winning all the big plums this season saw Mathaiyus garner maximum support, but the public choice only managed to finish a tame fourth.

Captain Morgan despite failing to break level from the gates in the traditional 2200M journey was ridden well off the pace, a confident Trevor Patel judging the pace set by Whomakestherules to a nicety. The Mallesh ward after setting a decent pace did well to first fight with the winner before hanging on to gain the runner-up berth.

The principal added attraction, the Marilingaiah Memorial Cup was claimed by the Arjun Manglorkar schooled Antananarivo who posted her second win this season. The grey was piloted in exemplary fashion by John who packed punch at the distance post to retire home a deserving winner. Fabulous Touch who did all the running in this sprint trip finished second ahead of Duke Of Clarence while the topweighted Zafran took the fourth spot. The favourite Lord Darlington from Padmanabhan’s yard jumped out last and though he was seen covering ground in the final furlong he lacked the ability to earn his cornbill in this company.

Trainer Prithviraj is enjoying leading in well fancied winners from his yard. He led in Regal Music who was strongly fancied by the Prithviraj camp to record second straight success after the winner had pulled off a successful coup in the first attempt. Well Regal Music justified the confidence of Prithviraj romping home without being unduly extended by Delhi-based jockey Dhanu Singh. After Regal Music did it on Saturday, the stable struck it rich again on Maybe Forever who like Regal Music was touted a `moral certainty’ and Dhanu Singh again enjoyed the ride, the winner spotted even before the dozen runners negotiated the final curve.

The fresh and young Dheeraj who is having a dream first season led in his fourth winner, Wild Wild Angels proving too good in the Epsom Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs. The talented apprentice Rayan Ahmed who recorded a double guided home the public choice without raising a sweat though he dropped his whip in the final furlong. Noble Sapphire finished second ahead of Extremelydangerous while Indian Brahmos and Artorius were never in the hunt.

After he met a tartar in Miniver Rose in his maiden effort, the public rage Cold Frontier cantered home in the Divine Light Plate run over a sprint. The winner is a goodtype of youngster and more will be heard of this talented son of Admiralofthefleet in time to come. St.Pauli Girl came home second ahead of Malana.

The Samar Singh schooled Magical Dancer dropped the biggest bombshell winning the N M Lingaraju Memorial Trophy in the hands of Jagadeesh. The favourite Rum Runner from Prasanna Kumar’s yard performed below par and failed to even make the frame. He Calls The Shots from Kolkata finished second and is one for the notebook.

The opening event saw the Dominic-trained  Rock Steady peg back Feet On Fire comfortably. The winner was piloted by Rayan Ahmed. The most fancied Love For Life disappointed finishing a poor fourth and this Satish Narredu filly, it appears needs time and space before she gets into shape to make a mark.
