The final day of the summer season was dominated by apprentice boys and a couple of jockeys who struggle to register a win. The three apprentice jockeys who struck it rich on the concluding day will be looking forward to add a couple more in the forthcoming Mysore season and hopefully the boys will get decent rides which will help boost their stock.

Shamaz Sheriff struck on the Nithyanand schooled Cherie Amour in the Classical Act Stakes. After the favourite War Envoy from Sriram Komandur’s yard failed to raise a gallop at the top of the straight, the lesser fancied Royal Serenity piloted by Trevor Patel appeared good to come home first before Shamaz working hard on Cherie Amour stormed into contention and put the issue beyond doubt in the final furlong. Goodwill Warrior who graced the wrong end of the field for most part of the journey finished on fastest at end to take the second spot ahead of Royal Serenity while Reference stayed on to finish fourth.

Next it was the turn of Nazer-Ul-Alam to showcase his skills in the Stewards Trophy, the plum event run over a sprint. Astride the 20 to one shot Ace Badraan from trainer Irfan Ghatala’s yard, Alam steadily improved his position as the top weighted Topspot  sprinted ahead and dictated the proceedings before the second in demand at the betting ring Life Awaits, another from Sriram’s yard took charge only to see Ace Badraan sail past him in the final furlong. Taqdeer Ka Badshah finished third while the overwhelming favourite La Dona lacked the gas even to finish in the frame.

Naveen guiding the fortunes of Sharath Kumar-trained Reczai produced a commendable effort to edge out Don’t Trust Anyone piloted by leading pro Srinath in the concluding event, the Romantic Dancer Stakes in a thriller. The apprentice displayed amazing poise and alertness when he pulled out Reczai the moment Srinath on the public choice switched to rails and in the final furlong stretched every sinew to gain the day. It was a good effort and Srinath was seen congragulating the youngster for his fine effort.  Indian Brahmos finished third ahead of Extremely Dangerous.

A Vishwanath came up tops in the Amazing Grace Stakes booting home El Matador from Mohd.Khan’s yard who was quietly fancied by the right connections. Unplaced in all his four earlier starts El Matador appeared to have sported wings the moment money was wagered and to the delight of his connections romped home. Mahesh schooled Appy’s Glamour who garnered the maximum support finished a tame third behind Mystical Shadow.

The Delhi boy Dhanu Singh who had a good summer season with eight wins to his credit had it easy on the Prasanna Kumar-trained Mansuetude in the opening event, the lower division of the Moonlight Romance Cup cruising home by a widening margin of more than 10 lengths. The bred in the purple Set To Win was fancied most but this Darius ward it is clear will take a while to make his presence felt on the track.

The upper division of the event also proved to be a one-horse affair with the public choice Animal King from Satish Narredu’s yard donkey-licking his eight rivals in the hands of Srinath. So Di Mar finished on purposefully at end to snatch the runner-up berth from San Bernardino while Panama took the fourth spot.

The favourite Torsoro from Irfan Ghatala’s yard provided Neeraj Rawal an arm-chair ride to success in the Prince Khartoum Plate run over a mile. The winner tracked Gabino and Michaela for most part of the trip before Neeraj reminded him of the task ahead and Torsoro responding gamely to his master’s call galloped home to record his second win of the season. Michaela finished second ahead of Mystic Music.

The public rage Top Brass from trainer Ajay Sharma’s yard met a tartar in Lady Majestic who registered her maiden success in the Glorious Colours Stakes. Arshad Alam partnered the winner. Purity caught the eye while finishing fourth and is one to watch if her connections choose to campaign her in the Mysore season.
