Jockey Trevor Patel Completes riding 1000 winners

The opening day of the Mysore main season turned out to be a memorable one for jockey P. Trevor who completed riding his 1000th winner through Turf Star in the K.T. Shamaiah Gowda Memorial Trophy. He had won earlier on Arrogant Approach and Savannah Sound to get to the coveted target. Starting his career on 24th December 2009, it took 7 years and 8 months to get to this milestone and this effort is the fastest by any Indian rider in the elite 1000 club. Trevor rode his first winner through rank outsider King’s Troop during the Indian Derby weekend in the year 2010 at Mumbai. “It’s a dream come true” he said, speaking to indiarace after completing his feat and profusely thanked all those who were responsible for his success.

S. Narredu trained Tutankhamun (Phoenix Tower-Dancerllon / Manjri Stud) slammed the small field in the Srikantadatta Narasimharaajawadiyar Memorial Million that featured day one’s card. Sporting the ‘Manjri’ colours Tutankhamun was taken to the front and the gelding was followed by Megasthenes and Pinyada racing almost together and the other runner in the field Admiral Act bracing the rear. Entering the straight Tutankhamun stepped up the pace with jockey Suraj Narredu well in control and stretched out easily even as Pinyada came under pressure while finishing second. Megasthenes finished a faw away third. Land Of Liberty was withdrawn on veterinary grounds after the colt hurt himself while being loaded into the float at Bangalore.

The 7 years old Savannah Sound (Antonius Pius-Born Free / Pratap Stud) from trainer S. Rakesh’s stables scored a big win in the Ranga Family Cup, a seven furlongs race for horses rated 80 and above. After a good beginning Savannah Sound was held back in third when two fancied runners Integrated and London streaked ahead to dispute the lead. As they turned for home Savannah Sound improved gradually and was up with a challenge with Integrated working hard on the inside. After a brief duel Savannah Sound and Trevor drew clear while Integrated held on from the late finishing Downton Abbey. Script Writer ended up fourth.

Arrogant Approach (Carnival Dancer-Passion To Perform / Hargobind Stud), that had won the Governor’s Cup on this track two years ago gave the newly jockey turned trainer K.P.G. Appu his first win on this track in the Star Of Mysore Trophy. Racing a handy fifth till entering the straight the 7 years old gelding got on to a tremendous acceleration and sped past the front runners. Speed Hawk rallied strongly to hold on to the second place from Ace Force while Markus Sittikus finished on fourth.

Md. Khan trained Turf Star (Ace-Light Dubai / Manju Meadows Stud) scored a runaway victory in the K.T. Shamaiah Gowda Memorial Trophy. Following the withdrawal of Regal Music Turf went into the race as a on-money favourite among the reduced field of thirteen runners. Trevor toyed around in about fourth till turning for home and when he showed the daylight from the outside the youngster cruised ahead and literarily ran away from the rest. For the record Benedetta, Reanna and Golden Diamond filled the frame in that order.

M. Bobby trained Mumbai import Be Bold (Kingda Ka-Ramatni / Dashmesh Stud) was strongly fancied at race time and the gelding obliged the favouritism in the division I of the Pune Plate. Diamond Attraction in its usual fashion set off in front and Be Bold tracked the leader. Approaching the last 300 metres Be Bold challenged from the outside and galloping better, surged ahead to score. In a cluster for the minor places Point beat Diamond Attraction and Majestic Queen at the post.

In the lower division S. Rakesh trained Amaris (Varenar-Pure Elation / Equus Stud) opened its account. The filly was brought quickly by Suraj Narredu from the outermost draw to join the front bunch as the 14 runners set off for the 1200 metres sprint. With 400 metres left on the straight Amaris took charge effortlessly and won much more comfortably than the verdict of one length suggests. Ireland held on in second from Always United. Noble Emperor finished fourth.

Md. Sajid Qureshi trained Al Dorado (Abbeyside-Queen Amendale / Dhana Stud) turned out to be the biggest upset of the day in the opener, the Somanathpur Plate. Racing in about fifth all the way Al Dorado burst out of the pack inside the last furlong and pulled it off from Ultimate Glory rallying into second. Time Always and Oceana finished third and fourth respectively. Giralda was withdrawn on veterinary grounds.
