Trainer Rakesh leading Savannah Sound (V R Jagadeesh Up), winner of The Mysore Dasara Sprint Championship (Gr.3)

S. Rakesh trained Savannah Sound (Antonius Plus-Born Free / Pratap Stud) accelerated in tremendous fashion to lift the Mysore Dasara Sprint Championship (Gr.3), a Terms race for horses 3 years old and over. Savannah Sound was a measure of consistency in recent months but the manner in which the 7 year old raised a winning gallop against much younger competition surprised everyone.

The speedy Silver Ikon was on the throttle right from the word ‘go’ and brought the field of a dozen runners into view on the straight. Siobhan was closing up with Castle Key also there in the fight as they headed past the 300 metres board. Silver Ikon was hard at work to stay ahead passing the distance post and Savannah Sound came with a terrific turn of foot from behind to flash past the front runners and register a fine win in this prestigious event. It was indeed a proud moment for the local lot of horses and also the owner Mr.Goodera Vasanta representing Nippon Bloodstock & Racing Pvt. Ltd., who has taken keen interest in patronising racing at this centre. Trainer S. Rakesh deserves to be complimented to have kept this 7 year old in pink of condition and the rider V.R. Jagadeesh who had a chance ride did full justice to it. Siobhan rallied on in second with Silver Ikon falling back to third. Kingoftheworld did well to complete the frame, coming from out of the blue. Never Again was a non-starter.

In the other prominent event of the day, the Governor’s Cup, Prasanna Kumar trained Let The Lion Roar (Mr Mellon-Aliventi /Ruia Stud) was given a good ride by Suraj Narredu to outbeat Booker Jones. As the reduced field of five horses left the gates for the 2000 metres trip Booker Jones set off in front with Let The Lion Roar in chase. They were followed by Ace Bucephalus, Ascendency and Naval Glory in that order. The five runners maintained that order in a single file till turning for home. On entering the home stretch Suraj got down to work on Let The Lion Roar and the bay colt responded readily to surge past Booker Jones a furlong before the finish. Ace Bucephalus and Naval Glory filled the frame in that order.

C.D.Monnappa trained Haloween’s Way (Lucifer Sam-Eagle Claws / Sans Craintes Stud) had earlier hoisted the ‘Nippon’ colours in the Original Vel B. Ashok Kumar Memorial Trophy. Malkia shot to the front in the mile trip and had opened a big lead of almost a distance. On entering the straight that lead started to diminish and Momotaro who was in chase went for it first. Haloween’s Way was brought between horses by Arshad Alam and the gelding spurted instantaneously to settle the issue much before the winning post. Beautiful Effect came in late to finish second ahead of Momotaro.

Trainer C.D.Monnappa scored a double through Gelignite (Mathematecian-Hyacinth / Sans Craintes Stud) in the Smt.Maliniraje Prasad Memorial Trophy. Gelignite worked its way to get to the front early in the race and made every post a winning one. As Gelignite stretched out easily by 4 ½ lengths New World, Anvill Star and Kazuri passed the post in a close finish for the minor places. Clever Trick was a non-starter in the race.

Pradeep Annaiah trained Sudha (Stardan-Shubha / Rolli Stud) was backed with conviction in the division I of the Triveni Plate and the filly did not disappoint her supporters. Sudha missed the jump yet again and was with the rear bunch in the initial stages of the race. Duke Of Norfolk was on a start to finish bid and brought them into the straight. Mayweather started to challenge the leader and Sudha who started to cover up ground from the extreme outside came with a flourish and sped past to score an encore. Mayweather beat Duke Of Norfolk for the second place. Lovely Micmel was a non-starter in the race.

V.Narayana Gowda trained Fire Rainbow (Sussex-Corona Di Oro / Pratap Stud) pulled off a surprise in the lower division. Racing in about fourth or fifth, till the top of the straight while Country’s Bloom called the shots, Fire Rainbow streaked to the front from the outside and drew clear. The fancied Girl With Pearl  could only finish second followed by Country’s Bloom and Invincible Wish. Indian Brahmos was withdrawn on veterinary grounds.

S.Ganapathy trained Star Carnation (Excellent Art-Attractress / Poona Stud) was the biggest upset of the day while opening its account in the Yadavagiri Plate. From a wide outside draw Star Carnation moved steadily to be up with the leader Malawi within the first furlong of the seven furlongs trip. With about 300 metres left on the straight Star Carnation surged ahead from the outside and despite veering out of the straight course a bit, stayed clear of Malawi. Alaina and Firing Line finished third and fourth respectively.

The 7 years old Cullinan (Juniper-Flamingo Fan / Kunigal Stud) whose only win so far was almost four years ago was sent off as the favourite for the opener of the day, the Lokapavani Plate and this V.Lokanayh’s trainee produced a good gallop to justify the support. Cullinan raced in about eighth all the way but stayed close to the inner rails. On entering the final straight the gelding sneaked through the inside and flashed ahead in a jiffy to take control and go clear from Senator. Kodals Princess just beat Golden Steps for the third place.
