CHRISTOPHER ALFORD RIDES A BLINDER ATOP AMBRIES

Mr Vikram Bachhawat & trainer Vijay Singh leading Lancaster (Suraj Narredu Up), winner of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Trophy

Champion trainer Vijay Singh was in full cry on Tuesday as he led in his second successive treble after an equally successful show last Saturday. Vijay’s conquests included a cup-double. Visiting jockey Suraj Narredu, who too completed a treble,  was responsible for two of the three winners. Allowing Dream Express to lead till the turning for home, Lancaster and Suraj shot ahead to win the Hong Kong Jockey Club Trophy quite comfortably from the favourite Oak Brook and Darsh. Vijay had earlier bagged the Bengal Area Cup with piping hot on-money favourite He Calls The Shots (S John up).

The race for the Pearson Surita Memorial Cup saw a keen tussle between trainer Ranuak Banerji’s Ambries and Vijay’s Volantis. It was Christopher Alford’s clever and daring horsemanship which won the day for Ambries in a close verdict with course favourite Volantis. The lead changed hands as Everybreakingwave and Lochinvar decided to run their usual races up front, while Volantis was in fourth slot on the outside and Ambries behind him along the rails. The order stayed more or less the same till the turning for home. Pacesetter Dashrath atop Lochinvar tried to close the gap after the field came off the rails but Alford was too quick  - both in mind and action – and shot Ambries thorough a narrow gap. Had he not succeeded  in his daring effort, the filly may have finished third. But the filly by Burden Of Proof out of Abdicate (Kunigal Stud) was equal to the task. However, she failed to pull clear and Alford had to pull out all stops to land the spoils in a nail-biting finish from the 2/1 favourite Volantis who too was galloping resolutely on the outside under Suraj Narredu’s stick.

In contrast, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Trophy was a tepid affair as the five two-year-olds were having their maiden start. Suraj had Lancaster (Phoenix Tower-Colour Splash (Manjri Stud) running in a box seat behind Dream Express as the gates opened and took over the running at the bend. Both Oak Brook and Darsh tried to close the gap in the straight but to no avail.

Amaranthus tried to make the upper division of the Relevance Handicap a start to finish affair but fell apart at the distance post. Suraj atop Shafiq Khan-trained Artiste Royal (Tariq-Absolutely Royal/) opted for the rails and his hard riding  did the trick as Fiorelle was moving up with giant strides on the outside. The lower division saw the public choice Major Colours go down narrowly to Robert Gowli’s Glamorous Glory who was given a forward ride by Mohit Singh.  The six-year-old mare by Mull Of Kintyre out of Savoy (Sohna Stud) has always been consistent in her efforts and she put her best foot forward on this occasion to ward off the favourite whose connections were confident of his success.

Vijay Singh’s He Calls The Shots (Multidimensional- Brushed Aside/ Usha Stud) pulled off a regulation triumph in the Bengal Area Cup as S John put the 10-to-7-on public choice into top gear in the straight. Sanvi ran a good second while Archivolt was prominent till the distance post before fading out completely.

Vijay Singh completed his treble with Levante (Burden Of Proof-Belladee/ Kunigal Stud ) who won the So Regal Plate in taking style as Suraj Narredu coaxed a breathtaking gallop from the light-framed filly for  a thumping victory.

Shyam Habbu’s Carralisa (Dutch Art-Red Garland) had to be examined by the vet at the starting stalls and found to be fit for racing – and boy did she do just that! The filly produced an effortless encore in the hands of Shezad Khan to bag the Moon Fairy Handicap, the day’s final event.
