SUMMER RAYS WINS MAYOR'S TROPHY

By Mahendra Mallya | 30 Nov 2017 | MUMBAI

Mr Vivek S Jain & trainer Imtiaz A Sait leading Summer Rays (P Trevor Up), winner of The Mayour's Trophy

Imtiaz Sait trained Summer Rays (Phoenix Tower – Donttellmewhattodo, Manjri Stud) struck winning form and she dished out a commendable performance while winning the Mayor’s Trophy with a good measure of comfort.

Flag Flying was quickest out but as they settled down Trevor eased hot favourite Summer Rays to assume command within the first furlong hard held, but galloping at a crisp pace. Hidden Soul ran close behind pushing Flag Flying to third with Triple Threat alongside a close fourth.

Summer Rays only got better in the straight as Trevor got her going with a crack or two. Flag Flying tried hard to stay close to Summer Rays, while Triple Threat was throwing her best as well. Neither could make any impact on Summer Rays and the filly galloped on gamely all through to the wire, Trevor even easing her up a few strides from

home. Flag Flying fought determinedly to pip Triple Threat for the second spot.

Lady In Red (Ace – Lady Angharad, Villoo’s Greenfield Farm) settled nice and early and made the most of the good start. Collegium led them into the straight and fought hard to stay in contention. David Allan atop Lady in Red saw his opportunity and surged past between the leader and Polynieces early in the straight. Once in the lead, Lady In Red was in control all the time and galloped strongly all the way. Celestial Light moved well along the inner rails and improved positions to finish runner up. Godsent recovered from a bad start and progressed steadily to be prominent in the straight. For the ground he lost at the gates, finishing third was a neat recovery. Arashi may have needed this run and also seems to need more ground. She warmed up far too late and although she finished a tame fourth, I wouldn’t be too disappointed with her showing. Give her a mile or more and she could prove to be a different proposition.

Selfie Star (Excellent Art – Maharanee, Poonawalla Exhilaration Stud) won as expected without encountering any danger at any stage. Running up in front just behind Silken Eyes, jockey David Allan stormed ahead to take charge soon on straightening up. Once shown the way forward, Selfie Star did the rest herself and unleashing a speedy surge and smothering any budding challenge well before the final furlong mark. David however, kept egging her on well past the distance post and only after ensuring that the fast finishing Bold March was still a safe distance behind, David eased Selfie Star and cruised to victory. Zanzibaar ran a good third.

Frosty (Cape Cross – Miss Particular, Highgrove Stud) compiled a clinical start to finish victory thus opening her season on a winning note and at nourishing odds at that! She set a steady pace for the nine-furlong journey with Unforgettable You stalking her closely. Timeless, the prime fancy was not too far behind with In My Dream and Uncle Scrooge was languishing in the rear.

The same order prevailed as they turned homewards, with Frosty giving it her all. Unforgettable You was progressing slowly and inching closer. Timeless too was just behind this pair but wasn’t quickening well enough. In My Dream shaped up well too and they were heading for a blanket finish.

Frosty put u stiff resistance even as Unforgettable You got alongside. She kept at it stubbornly and her courage and grit paid off as she held on by a whisker. It was disappointment for the Unforgettable You camp as their ward did everything right yet fell short by a woefully tiny margin. Timeless and In My Dream finished just over a length behind the winner and runner-up and they both look in good shape to do well this season.

Untitled (Sussex – Overdrive, Pratap Stud) chose the day to achieve her maiden success after 13 previous attempts. She took off forcefully from the gates and maintained a clear lead over her rivals throughout the six-furlong race. She did garner some smart money at race time, hence wasn’t really a bolt from the blue for the ones in the know. Untitled built on the handy lead she had on turning for home and her jockey Hanumant Singh rode out relentlessly all through the straight. Alyatis never settled to a straight course squandering her chances with switching out and then shifting inward again. Royal Ace put up a good fight and did fairly well to end one behind the Antia ward Untitled.

Divine Solitaire (Mull of Kintyre – Fall of the Hammer, Capricorn Stud) won after about three and half years, this time in the hands of jockey Joy Chinoy. The seven year old from Altaf Hussain’s yard put up a strong show capitalizing on the steady start and staying in a striking position at the turn.

Locarno led them into the straight and stayed ahead for a while before Divine Solitaire rushed him approaching the distance post. Once his lead was taken away, Locarno could not stay on and fell back. Sumaaq too didn’t show the zip afting in the third for a while. Way Ahead took a lot of time to get into the groove and by the time he warmed up it was far too late. Super Icon ran on to finish in the money. Aeolus Maximus, as he has done so many times, rose from the rear bunch to gather speed and improved positions and run on the frame.

Royal Classic (Kitten’s Joy – Resound, Shree Ram Stud) put in a scorching finish to simply draw away in the last 100 meters and score a handsome win in the hands of young and promising jockey SA Amit. When Wilshire took charge in the homestretch, he bounded forward and shaped well to last it out. Beyond Forces, the one closest to Wilshire was toiling to catch up, although he too narrowed the gap a bit. Apprentice jockey SA Amit then got working on Royal Classic inide the final furlong and within strides Royal Classic accounted for both Beyond Forces and Wilshire to romp home full of steam.

For the professionals, trainer Dallas Todywalla and jockey David Allan combined to score a double each.
