TEMERITY WINS AC ARDESHIR TROPHY IN A THRILLER

The AC Ardeshir Trophy (Gr3) went all the way to the wire and Temerity (Intense Focus – Narmina, Capricorn Stud) ridden powerfully by jockey Neeraj Rawal, just managed to put her nose in front at the right juncture to pip B Fifty Two on the post.
B Fifty Two started off well and led the field comfortably all the way into the straight with Temerity in second, Aster Rose was further behind but improving positions as they closed in for the final run. B Fifty Two kicked on stubbornly even as Temerity drew closer with each stride. As they got closer to the distance post, it was Temerity whowas under pressure as B Fifty Two showed no signs of weakening. Neeraj Rawal had to dig deep and get everything out of Temerity. The Shroff trained filly never relented and lunged forward and in a last ditch effort just managing to nose out B Fifty Two in a thrilling finish.
Aster Rose also put in a strong finish, but could not pitch-in enough to get the desired result, finishing a length behind the winner and runner up. Phoenix Tiger ran a disappointing race and was never in the hunt. B Fifty Two did everything right until the Golden moment and it was a pity to see such an effort go down so narrowly.
Neeraj Rawal had earlier partnered hot favourite Zenon (Champs Elysees – Questa Nova, Highgrove Stud) to an emphatic victory in the opening race of the day. Nelsons Blood made the early running, leading them all the way into the straight, but ran out of gas at the business end. Zenon bounded forward and galloped majestically to the front and drew away from the opposition to score an authoritative victory. Glorious Eyes ended a faraway second. Zenon with this impressive victory should show out in his next outing as well.
Gazino (Surfrider – La Joconde, Ruia Stud) after an aberration following his back-to-back wins in Pune, got to his best again and won the NM Irani Cup with a healthy argin. Gazino stalked leader Star Councillor until well into the homestretch. He then picked up speed and began to devour ground at a good clip, leaving his opponents behind and stretching out nicely to win with a good measure of comfort. Yanna Rascala, the prime fancy, ran a tame second, without making any impact on the winner.
Mine That Bird (Sedgefield – Feona, Jai Govind Stud) won a hard-fought battle for his debut win. The race came to a boil midway in the straight when favourite Star of Thea went past early leader Teeteboro and took charge. Priceless Art and Mine That Bird were galloping together just behind the favourite. Star of Thea could not add the finishing touch as Priceless Art and Mine That Bird were looming large and gaining on Star of Thea. The duo were going all out matching stride for stride in the last 100 meters and flashed the winning post together. Mine That Bird that got the nod right managing to edge out Priceless Art and score on debut. Priceless Art missed her debut success, but will live to fight another day.
Albareto (Western Aristocrat – Daily Edition, Nanoli Stud) was made to stretch to while galloping to his maiden victory. He settled well and not too far from the front-running Sereno. Sereno failed to sustain and went down meekly when Albareto came to challenge. Once in the lead, Albareto surged further ahead from Sereno, but Gloriana wasclosing in rapidly. Albareto shifted out under pressure but kept the momentum going. Gloriana was always right behind but Albareto kicked on to stay ahead, winning by less than a length. Gloriana didn’t seem quite settled while on her finishing run with Albareto shifting out hence may have been hampered a bit. She has had good outing and can be expected to come off the maiden ranks soon.
Happy Birthday (Gaswar – Oscar Silk, Bhaktawar Stud) built on the spark of some form he had shown at Pune and this time round he put up a determined run to achieve his first success and it has been a long wait indeed - his 26th attempt to be precise! Silver Edge was urged to go for the lead and he galloped smoothly to build a handy lead as they turned for home. Happy Birthday made steady progress from the mid-bunch and was in third as they swung around the bend. Silver Edge was about four lengths in front when jockey Dashrath Singh began to get the Shahzaan Shah ward going. Happy Birthday accelerated nicely at the call and sped past Silver Edge to score his big win. Silver Edge did well to finish second, while Dazzling Eyes improved to run in the money.
Jockey SA Amit rode a persistent race and brought the best out of King of Killen (Phoenix Tower – Princess Killeen, Manjri Stud). King of Killen has been running close on several occasions but had not been able to deal the killer blow and open his account. This time however, apprentice jockey SA Amit showed great determination and skill to
match to resurface after the chips were down. King of Killen and slipped in through the inner rails and had barely taken up to lead when hot favourite Angels Touch cruised longside and even headed King of Killen. It looked all smooth sailing for the favourite as her rider Trevor rarely has lost in recent times after shaping well in the final furlong. Meanwhile Masquerade was also warming up nicely and gaining on the pair in front. Angels Touch was still leading narrowly as they approached the winning post when Amit rode out brilliantly to peg back Angels Touch with a re-run to power his way and guide King of Killen, trained by C Rajendra, his maiden victory after 17 previous attempts.
Apprentice jockey SA Amit showed good potential, particularly with this ride and he is on the right course to improve immensely. For the professionals, trainer Pesi Shroff and jockey Neeraj Rawal scored a double each.
