Trainer M Narredu leading Aggregated (C Alford Up), winner of the Aakriti Art Gallery Calcutta 2000 Gr.2

The western India challenger Aggregated, from the stables of Mallesh Narredu, lifted the Aakriti Art Gallery Calcutta 2000 (Grade II) at the Calcutta racecourse on Wednesday. The on-money public choice Shaman ran a noteworthy race but failed to collar the son of Dean’s Kitten out of Wonder Smile, with Christopher Alford in the saddle. The wily Alford allowed pace-setter Simon Templar to call the shots till before the turning for home and took over the running smoothly thereafter, thus stealing a march over the favourite Shaman. Both Aggregated and Shaman were going hell for the leather in the straight but the eventual winner had the advantage and he did not let it slip. The favourite’s run was quite encouraging and he will be worth keeping an eye on, as will be Hartnell and Rufus. Vijay Singh’s Namcha lost all his chances at the start as he veered out sharply and threw S John off. He has behaved similarly in the past and his roguish gate manners need improvement.

Dashrath Singh enjoyed a successful day at work with three winners in the bag – Sanvi (5/1), Coup De Grace (3/1) and Ayra’s Pet (7/2). Jockey CS Jodha failed to make it to the city and Dashrath Singh got a chance ride on Sanvi (Chevalier-Bow River Gold/ Ruia Stud) in the race for the Bachawat Foundation Trophy. The favourite Mocha Locha lost some ground at the start but did well to finish a decent third despite taking the longest route home. The Chisel Craft Calcutta Juvenile Stakes was pocketed by Bharath Singh-trained Coup De Grace (Arazan-Nijinsky Bullet) in copybook manner. Following Snow Star till the top of the straight, Coup De Grace shot into the lead smoothly and won comfortably.  Another fancied runner, Venezia, made a late bid for honours to finish a good second. Dashrath completed his treble for the day with Ayra’s Pet. The speedy filly moved across quickly from an outside draw and followed Aileen and Multiple till the straight before taking over the running. The speedster by Express Wish out of Tsesebe (Mebajeona Stud) won quite easily in the end. Gryffindor and Trevor moved with raking strides in the final furlong but the winner was already clear.

The 2000 metres race for The Chisel Arts Trophy saw Vijay Singh-trained Volantis (Multidimensional-Silver Print/ Usha Stud) come with a late run in the hands of PS Chouhan to get the better of Shourisha who was shaping like a winner at the top of the straight. It would be fair to say that the six-year-old succumbed to an upcoming four-year-old filly who defied 4.5kg in all ( 2.5kg penalty for finishing second in his previous effort, one kg for being out of the scale and a kg of PSC’s overweight). The favourite Washington led till into the straight before calling it a day. Thus, the unmeasured monsoon hat-trick horse finally got calibrated.

Manvendra Singh’s Fortune Express (Express Wish-Set The Mood/ Mebajeona Stud) won the Konark Collectables Trophy in taking style. The colt’s journey to the highest class was always assured from the day he notched up his maiden triumph and he did not disappoint his many followers and connections. It is more than likely that the connections will target the Sprinters Cup this year at this centre with their crack sprinter.

The two divisions of the Naktala Shilpi Astha Trophy fell to fancied runners. While the upper division went Stellanova’s way, the lower division saw Javed Khan-trained Beatles Bible (Masterofthehorse-Hugoshair) win a hard fought race. With A Imran Khan in the saddle, h e got the better of Indus Prince and Romantic Society.  Raunak Banerji’s Stellanova (Chevalier-Star Pride/ Ruia Stud) was piloted by Christopher Alford.
