SANA DECIMATES CALCUTTA OAKS FIELD

By Epsom Ace | 16 Dec 2017 | KOLKATA

Mr Joydeep Datta Gupta leading Sana (Dashrath Singh Up), winner of The Calcutta Oaks (Gr.3)

Pitted against mediocre opposition, fashionably bred Sana made a complete mockery of her six rivals in the Calcutta Oaks run at RCTC on Saturday. Jockey Dashrath Singh settled the daughter of Multidimensional out of Yana (Usha Stud) in the third slot, while Friendship set a fast pace, followed by Implicit Trust. The order remained virtually the same till the turning for home where Dashrath decided to release the brakes. Thereafter, there was simply no stopping the Bharath Singh-trained filly as she continued to increase her margin of victory. The prized property of the syndicate led by Joydeep Datta Gupta will next take a tilt at the Calcutta Derby next month (January 7). Datta Gupta had predicted confidently after her victory in the Calcutta Monsoon Derby, that Sana would go on to win the 1000 Guineas, Oaks and Derby in winter. Well, it’s two down and one to go – the big’un so to say and one is pretty certain after this showing that good looking bay filly will carry the confidence of the Calcutta punters on D-day.

Available at odds of 3/1, Attaolahi-trained Captain Morgan lifted the D Khaitan Memorial Calcutta Gold Cup in the hands of the reliable Y Srinath. Tracking Shivalik Showers till the turning for home, Captain Morgan (Admiralofthefleet-Caprese/ Kunigal Stud) sailed ahead under Srinath’s stick to land the spoils. The favourite Colombiana ended up a none too impressive fourth.

The two divisions of the Goodfellas Handicap also witnessed favourites take a plunge. Manvendra Singh’s Tiberon (Top Class-Star Divine/ Mukteshwar Stud)) won the upper division with a late run in the hands of Hindu Singh while Bath-trained Atheist (Stern Opinion-Chang Mai/) bagged the lower division with Shezad Khan in the saddle. The favourite Mahasuvi burst her blood vessel in this race and failed to make the frame. Bacaardi shaped like a winner at one stage but buckled in the final furlong.

Trainer Vijay Singh’s Lakshay was the rage of the ring in the race for the CM Verma Memorial Cup. It was however his filly Aashna (Win Legend-Ray Of Sunshine/ Dashmesh Stud) who bagged the honours. Following Speed Force till midway through the 1100m scurry, the two-year-old shot ahead to leave the field standing. The favourite ran like a dud right through the race.

James McKeown—trained Ophion (Abbeyside-Bold Reply) continued to maintain his St Leger form with a thumping victory over Shohin in the MB Medhora Cup run over a mile. S John rode a similar race to that which fetched him the earlier triumph where he had come off the pace with a spirited gallop.

Friendless Majestic (Phoenisx Tower-Riyasa/ Manjri Stud) from Shafiq Kham’s yard did justice to his low impost and pocketed The PP Ginwala Memorial Cup run over a mile. Lying well off the pace, jockey Ranidan Sngh did well to weave his way through the 11-horse field and draw away in the straight,

The curtain came down with Jasbir Singh-trained Sicario (Dancing Forever-Astral/ Hazara Stud) carrying his crushing impost to victory in the hands of Mohit Singh. The unlikely favourite Spallanzani, who was running after a long lay-off, faded out after showing early speed. City Heights was a worthy runner-up.
