IMPRESSIVE CLYMENE REIGNS SUPREME

By Mahendra Mallya | 15 Feb 2018 | MUMBAI

Trainer Faisal A Abbas leading Clymene (A Sandesh Up), winner of The Trance Plate

Faisal Abbas trained Clymene (Western Aristocrat – Magdalena, Nanoli Stud) was the most impressive winner on the day, justifying the cramped odds offered on her. Jockey Sandesh confidently guided her into the lead soon on start, and Clymene galloped smoothly to the front like a well-oiled machine.

Into the straight, Clymene quickened nicely to step up acceleration and within strides had stretched away from her rivals. She looked the winner as early as midway up the straight and was majestic in her finish, winning by over four lengths clocking a quick 57:88.  Wise Child improved to end runner-up and Ascension managed to pip Glorious Land for the third.

Astute trainer Malesh Narredu combined with jockey PS Chouhan to deliver a treble to owner Mr Jaydev Mody. The camp tasted first success for the day in a keen fighting finish where Kramer (Phoenix Tower – Meydana, Manjri Stud) fought resolutely to thwart the dual challenge that was posed by Governor General and favourite Excellent Gold.

Kramer slipped into the lead from the gates and galloped at a good rate, with Charging tigress and Undisputed in tow. Excellent Gold settled a couple of lengths behind this trio. Governor General was off lazily and found himself at the tail end.

The race came to a boil soon as they turned for home. Kramer was going all out when Excellent Gold start to inch closer. Governor General too made good progress and the trio were abreast with a furlong to go. Kramer and PS Chouhan fought gallantly all through even as Excellent Gold and Governor General were breathing down his neck. In the end Kramer held on narrowly in the three-way finish, Governor General snatching the runner up slot from Excellent Gold.

Hudson (Excellent Art – Mystical Dancer, Cyza Stud) powered his way to form with a stellar performance. Sitting up well in front behind leader Bullion Express, Hudson cruised past the leader soon as the 400m board. Once in the lead, Hudson devoured ground at a good clip and was soon out of reach of his hapless rivals. Hudson marched on to compile his maiden victory by a huge margin. Star Anise improved places to finish second, pegging back Exosphere. Xoxo ended a close fourth with the bunch vying for the minor placing.

The Narredu camp capped with another exciting victory in the concluding race of the day with Montecasino (Multidimensional – Sea of Grace, Usha Stud) holding his nerve and countering the late challenge from Synchronicity close home. Golden Horde did help the winner’s cause though as he shifted out hampering Synchronicity’s progress at a crucial juncture.

Montecasino led from the start and once in the straight he managed to stay ahead although the others were closing on him. Golden Horde did apply pressure on Montecasino, however, jockey PS Chouhan put his head down and focused on what he had to do. Synchronicity arrived with a big gallop from the outside, however had to take the foot off the pedal when Golden Horde came in the way. Montecasino did have to cover the remaining 100 meters or so, which he did manage in the end, successfully keeping Synchronicity at bay.

The day started on a sedate note for the punters with favourite Massimo (Mull of Kintyre – Dragnet, Sohna Stud) obliging his large number of supporters. Massimo settled in second behind Honourable Eyes with Sumaaq close behind. That’s the order they entered the straight and soon Massimo surged past the leader. Soon Sumaaq arrived and there was a sort of tussle between the two. Honourable Eyes fell back to third momentarily but clawed his way back to offer a fight. There were no last minute surprises though as Massimo held on grittily to claim his maiden success. Honourable Eyes did well to finish a close second ahead of Sumaaq.

Godsword (Diffident –Callist, Yerawada Stud) notched up her maiden win on her second start and she showed good improvement over her debut run. She settled nice and easy chasing Whitewalker until into the straight and then unleashed a powerful burst to speed away from them all. Clark Kent made a forward dash in the latter half of the straight but by then Godsword had it all well sewn up.

Alyaties (Noverre – Aim to Achieve, Sohna Stud) backed her last start win with another rousing victory. She won a lot easier than one expected and was smooth in her finish, coming from behind to finish impressively. Ridgewood Star had taken the lead from Storm Star soon on turning for home and was travelling nicely too. Alyaties had received a check approaching the turn and lost a couple of positions from third initially, but the young apprentice lad Zeeshan kept his cool all through. Ridgewood Star was shaping well midway down the straight when Alyaties started to come into prominence back again. Zeeshan then got going and had Alyaties quickening for home. The Mansoor Shah ward accelerated well in the final furlong and nailed it a few strides from home.

Jaydev and Chouhan missed out narrowly in reaping a fourth win for the day, however that was not to be as their Lord Commander just fell short, going by a nose. Lord Commander surged ahead past the 400 m and left the others to chase him down. He seemed well in command and had a handy lead too coming into the final furlong. Lilac Time (Rebuttal – Con Artist, Vikram Greenlands) came through as one sporting wings and flew down in the final stages to pip Lord Commander on the post.

For the professionals, trainer Malesh Narredu saddled a fine treble, as did jockey PS Chouhan. Trainer Narendra Lagad chipped in with a double as well.
