Set Alight

It’s bad news for race goers. Set Alight is not going to be seen in action in the Invitation Cup race on Sunday, 25th October 2009, at Hyderabad. Mr. Zeyn Mirza, Racing Manager of United Racing & Bloodstock Breeders Ltd., confirmed the news to Indiarace at Hyderabad. “We had to take this decision this morning,” he said, “She is a wonderful filly, but unfortunately she is suffering from Tendonitis and we tried our best to see her on the track but had to take this harsh decision finally.” We may not be seeing this wonder filly on the track again as she may be sent to the stud for breeding. This wonder filly was picked up from Usha Stud by the keen eyes of Mr. Zeyn Mirza, for Dr. Vijay Mallya. She was popular for her ‘Signature’ acceleration, having won 11 races out of 13 starts. The two races that eluded her were The Indian Derby and the Nizam’s Gold Cup. She finished second on both occasions. Set Alight made amends for her two consecutive failures and silenced her critics when she trounced her three rivals in the President of India Gold Cup at Hyderabad. She was all set to be the hot favourite at the Invitation Cup race. Set Alight was declared as the horse of the season at Hyderabad for the Monsoon Season when the championship awards were announced. India Race contacted the trainer Mr.Pesi Shroff late in the evening on Monday and he too confirmed the news. “She has been a wonderful filly and she is one of the best horses I have trained so far”. “She has been dear not only to the team behind her but to all the race goers across India and I am sure that she will be missed on the big day”. Speaking further, he said,” the tendon problem was not very severe but we didn’t want to risk her and it was a collective decision by the team in the best interest of the filly”.
