ALLORA WINS KAILASHPAT SINGHANIA TROPHY

By Mahendra Mallya | 14 Apr 2018 | MUMBAI

Mr Geoffrey B Nagpal Allora (A Sandesh Up), winner of The Kailashpat Singhania Trophy

Sanjay Kolse trained Allora (China Visit – Serrafina, Usha Stud) scored a fluent win to pick up the Kailashpat Singhania Trophy with a measure of comfort. It was Wild Fire who hit the front with Flag Flying in an uncustomary second position, Allora prominent right through with the rest following close behind.

On straightening up for home, Allora, with Sandesh in the saddle, showed good acceleration to surge forward and take charge. Chaplin made his move along the rails, while Summer Rays tried to throw his might between these two. Allora maintained a healthy lead all the way and eventually won easing up with three lengths to spare. Chaplin fought off Summer Rays to snatch away the runner-up slot with Summer Rays breathing down his neck. Flag Flying ended a tame fourth, without showing that he any fire in his belly in this race.

Sandesh enjoyed a clean sweep – winning all the three mounts he was assigned for the day. Debutante Rose Gold (Nett Whizz – Roseanna, Hazara Stud) was his first engagement in the second race. They got off to a good start and settled down in third behind Julio Cesaro and Falconette and made good headway along the turn.

Julio Cesaro went down meekly when Rose Gold arrived to challenge. Rose Gold galloped on gamely to stretch away from the early leaders. Quail Hallow started to warm up late but by then Rose Gold had sealed the issue. All he could do was to bring down the margin to less than two lengths at the finish. Bernice also improved positions to finish third, but it was Rose Gold that scored a memorable debut, winning the upper division of the Lei Plate.

The lower division of the race saw Frieze (Excellent Art – Deraasaat, Poona Stud) achieve her victory on debut with a pleasing performance first time out. She settled well in second coming into the straight, and then wore down leader Baymax gradually, catching up midway in the straight and then unleashing fluent gallop to get past and post a comfortable victory. She quickened well when asked by jockey CS Jodha to win without having to exert herself at all. Baymax did well to finish second, while Stromborn edged out Primum Non Nocere for the third.

After two wins earlier in the day, jockey A Sandesh capped the day with another victory, his third for the day. This one though astride Grand Tenton (Kingda Ka – Snow Cannon, Highgrove Stud) was a bit tricky as at a crucial stage he was found wanting for room.

Hopeilicious enjoyed the early lead and paced in front of the field with My Precious, Rare Silver and Arrecife close behind. Grand Tenton was hugging the rails while Ebony was on his outside, with Bhaktawar bringing up the rear.

Hopeilicious kicked on strongly on entering the straight with a bunch of horses in chase. Grand Tenton was stuck in the bunch with no way to move out for a few strides. He did not get an opening until after the distance post, but the moment he saw the clearance, Grand Tenton galloped powerfully to challenge the leader. Hopeilicious fought bravely until the end, but Grand Tenton forced his way to the front to pull off his maiden victory, scoring by a narrow margin.

A rare dead-heat had the hearts thumping in the fifth race of the day when hot favourite Polynieces (Mull of Kintyre – Perfect Polly, Bhaktawar Stud) and Firewings (Phoenix Evans – Dixie Evans, Manjri Stud) flashed past the wire locked together.

Polynieces had Firewings tagging along from the moment they settled down and these two were a couple of lengths ahead of the rest as they turned for home. Polynieces held a slight advantage all the way into the final furlong. Firewings started to mount severe pressure on the favourite and they fought it out stride for stride. Firewings was gaining on Polynieces but the winning post was drawing closer too. They hit the wire together and the wait for the judge’s announcement was never-ending. Finally a dead heat was declared and for the efforts of both the horses and the jockeys. That seemed a fair result. Royal Classic improved considerably and did very well to finish alongside the duo.

Isinit (Arabian Gulf – Soul Sister, Manjri Stud) finally achieved her maiden success and took a long time indeed. However, it was indeed satisfying to taste the sweetness of a win nonetheless. She had it surprisingly easy though as she geared up well from the start. She stuck by Komodo Dragon from the gates and was right alongside until they turned for home.

Into the straight, and apprentice jockey K Nazil egged her on to go for the lead and Isinit accelerated well to dash to the front. She kept the momentum going all through and went clear of the field approaching the distance post, building up nicely to sustain all the way. Komodo Dragon ended runner up while Ricardus finished in the money.

For the professionals, Jockey A Sandesh scored a fine treble, while trainer Vishal Gaekwad saddled a double.
